This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.
The Role & Key Responsibilities

The Reporting and Statutory Returns Accountant will play a leading role in delivering corporate accounting services and fulfilling the Forces’ financial statutory obligations.
They will manage the production of the annual accounts and the statutory returns.
They will coordinate the support and response to internal and external audit engagements.
They will supervise the maintenance of the balance sheets and bank reconciliations, and fulfil statutory obligations for areas such as Pension Accounting and Budgeting.
Skills & Experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
CCAB qualified accountant (i.e. ICAEW, ICAS, ICAI, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or a recognised equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
1. Comprehensive knowledge of the CIPFA Code of Practice on Local Authority Accounting in the United Kingdom.
2. Extensive experience in financial accounting, maintaining ledgers, reconciliations and journals, financial reporting, managing audit support, pensions accounting, annual close down and preparing a statement of accounts.
3. Proven ability to meet tight deadlines within unpredictable and demanding environments whilst delivering high quality products.
4. Experience of interpreting and applying financial accounting policies accurately and effectively to ensure compliance and accurate reporting.
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to explain complex technical accounting to non-finance stakeholders.
6. Ability to regularly review procedures or systems with teams to identify improvements and simplify processes and decision making.
7. Able to establish effective working relationships with Finance colleagues in order to deliver financial reporting obligations.
8. An enthusiastic and empowering management and leadership style with high levels of self-motivation and resilience as well as the tenacity to see difficult issues through to their natural conclusion.
9. Ability to analyse complex Finance issues and risk, ensuring ethical, legal and best practice solutions are implemented.
10. Experience and proven ability to lead a team of Assistant Accountants.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
This role will involve travel to and working at police sites in both Surrey and Sussex.
