VDOT Bristol District is looking for a skilled Senior Geotechnical Engineer to provide expertise in investigation, testing, analysis, design, and construction for transportation projects. In this role, you will serve as a geotechnical expert on construction and maintenance projects, offering forensic evaluations when issues arise during or after construction. You will be responsible for fulfilling duties as the responsible charge engineer, ensuring projects comply with policies, procedures, and the Code of Virginia. Key responsibilities include:
1. Assisting in policy development.
2. Managing projects and documentation.
3. Conducting geotechnical research.
4. Providing recommendations on geotechnical investigations and designs.
5. Evaluating consultant designs.
6. Offering support to construction and maintenance staff.
7. Contributing to engineering studies and technical communications.
The position requires effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, including local governments, elected officials, and the FHWA.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience in geotechnical analysis and design practices.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to develop complex, technical reports.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and oversee complex geotechnical projects.
• Ability to oversee and assess the work of consultants.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Experience applying FHWA and AASHTO specifications and guidelines for geotechnical exploration and design.
• Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
• Ability to provide guidance on policy and procedure interpretation relating to program areas.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Experience applying geotechnical and civil engineering principles and practices.
• Ability to conduct complex analysis of geotechnical designs and develop alternative solutions to project designs.
Additional Considerations
• Knowledge of project management processes.
• Skill in negotiating.
• Experience in leading and managing geotechnical engineering projects and resolving complex issues.
