Job summary
We are looking to appoint a Consultant Anaesthetist with a Special in Interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia. There will be opportunities to specialise in anaesthesia for a variety of surgical specialties dependant on individual interests and training.
Candidates are invited to apply on a full time basis.
You must have a GMC licence to practice and be on the specialist register or CCT to be obtained within 6 months of the interview date which will be held on 16th September 2024.
Main duties of the job
The proposed timetable will contain six DCC sessions, including two sessions (1 day) of anaesthetic provision within the maternity unit.
At the Conquest Hospital there is a consultant-led maternity unit where doctors, including anaesthetists, are available 24 hours a day. Anaesthetists provide epidural analgesia, and support assisted and emergency births. There is a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). The Buchanan delivery suite has ten rooms, one main operating theatre and two recovery beds. There is also midwifery-led unit at Eastbourne District General Hospital. There were nearly 4000 births in 2023, of which 400 were elective caesarian sections and 600 carried out as an emergency. The anaesthetics department provides a consultant-led high risk obstetrics clinic once a week.
The Anaesthetic department covers two acute hospitals Conquest Hospital, Hastings and Eastbourne District General Hospital and the successful will be expected to work cross site.

Job plan and duties
The successful candidate will have a job planning session after 3-6 months of being in post to review their timetable and SPA (supporting professional activities). The PA (programmed activities) job plan will incorporate of SPA (1 timetabled SPA session per week, and additional SPA). Candidates who wish to work a different number of PAs will be considered.

A theatre session or all-day operating list is between 08:00 and 18:00 hrs and equates to PAs. A single (AM or PM) session is PA.
The morning session following a non-resident 1st on call ( overnight) is non-clinical during weekdays to ensure adequate is PA on average
