We are looking for an enthusiastic capable doctor to join our fantastic respiratory team at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, at an experienced Foundation Year 1 (FY1) level.It is an essential requirement that the applicant has 6 months experience working clinically in the NHS as an employed doctor (unpaid posts such as observerships do not count). This role will be based day-to-day on the Respiratory and Acute Medicine wards at St Mary’s Hospital. There post holder will be on the take rota where they will clerk sick patients and be on the cardiac arrest team. There is an opportunity to upskill in most aspects of respiratory medicine including COPD, asthma, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, non-invasive ventilation and more. As part of the respiratory team, the post holder (along with the registrars, SHOs and other FY1s) will be responsible for the ward-based care of 33 patients on Manvers ward, including an 8-bedded acute respiratory unit. They will also periodically work on the Acute Medicine ward, looking after recently admitted patients. The post holder will be on the on call rota, clerking new admissions and providing out of hours (evening and weekend) ward cover.
There will be opportunities in this post to build on the skills and experiences developed earlier in their career and to lead independent ward rounds, independently assess unwell patients, and be supported in the transition to more senior medical roles.
This is an academic respiratory unit and the post holder will be expected to take an active role in education and research. This will involve teaching junior medical staff and medical students, and completing one audit or research project. They will have opportunities to present at the weekly departmental educational meeting.
The post holder will be expected to attend the structured teaching programmes provided by the department and regular FY1 teaching.

The post holder will work as part of a consultant-led team looking after inpatients on the respiratory ward (Manvers). The 33 patients on the respiratory ward (Manvers) are looked after by a minimum of 2 registrar grade and 4 other (SHO/FY1) staff members at all times, divided into two teams led by a separate consultant. There are often more clinical staff on the wards depending on annual leave, study leave and on call commitments. These patients have conditions such as lung cancer, COPD, asthma, respiratory infections (e.g. pneumonia, TB, bronchiectasis), pleural disease (pneumothorax, effusions and empyaemas), respiratory failure, interstitial lung disease and other general medical conditions.
The post holder will participate in daily board and ward rounds, complete jobs from the ward round, and attend weekly radiology meetings. They will be expected to be able to:
• Take a history and examine a patient
• Identify and synthesise problems
• Prescribe safely
• Keep an accurate and relevant medical record
• Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
• Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
