As a Mental Health Counsellor, you will play a crucial role in supporting the emotional well-being and mental health of our students. You will work closely with our dedicated team to deliver and monitor the impact of individual and small group counselling sessions, support the development of a positive school environment, and assist our Designated Safeguarding Lead in addressing mental health concerns.

Job Description
Reports to: Headteacher or relevant Senior Leadership Team member
Main Contacts: Pupils and their parents/carers, Headteacher, school staff, and external mental health services/agencies
Main Purpose of the Role:
1. Provide comprehensive mental health support to students, promoting their emotional well-being and resilience.
2. Deliver individual and group counselling sessions to address a range of mental health issues.
3. Collaborate with school staff and external agencies to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
Counselling and Support:
1. Conduct individual and group counselling sessions to support students with mental health concerns.
2. Develop and implement personalised support plans for students, addressing their specific needs and goals.
3. Provide crisis intervention and support for students experiencing acute mental health issues.
Collaboration and Communication:
1. Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and the Designated Safeguarding Lead to identify and support students in need of mental health services.
2. Liase with external mental health services and agencies to ensure comprehensive support for students.
3. Maintain regular communication with parents/carers to involve them in their child's mental health care.
Assessment and Monitoring:
1. Conduct assessments to identify students' mental health needs and monitor their progress over time.
2. Keep accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions and interventions.
3. Evaluate the effectiveness of counselling programs and adjust as needed.
Training and Education:
1. Provide training and support to school staff on mental health awareness and strategies for supporting students.
2. Organise workshops and information sessions for students and parents on mental health topics.
3. Stay updated on the latest research and best practices in mental health counselling.
Promotion of Well-being:
1. Develop and implement school-wide initiatives to promote mental health and well-being.
2. Create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable seeking help.
3. Advocate for the mental health needs of students within the school community.
Administrative Duties:
1. Complete necessary documentation and reports related to counselling services.
2. Attend relevant meetings and contribute to the development of school policies on mental health.
3. Use initiative and good time-management skills to organize your workload effectively.
Qualifications and Experience:
1. A degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
2. Relevant professional qualifications and registration with a recognised counselling or mental health body.
3. Experience working with children and adolescents in a counselling or mental health support role.
4. Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed practices, and mental health issues.
5. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
6. Ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders and maintain confidentiality.
