Applications are invited for the role of Trust Grade Doctor. These posts are graded at the equivalent level to Core Trainees in Psychiatry CT1-3 and you will be placed at the appropriate level based on your experience. Although graded at core trainee level, the posts are not recognised for training by the Postgraduate Dean, however, many of our Trust Grades successfully go on to join formal Training Schemes in psychiatry. You will benefit from gaining valuable experience across several posts in psychiatry including out of hours assessment work. You will be required to move to different sites for each placement. You will also have access to several training/educational opportunities including dedicated teaching sessions. The post will suit an individual considering a career in psychiatry and offers close support and supervision from a Consultant Psychiatrist and our Director of Medical Education.
Depending on service needs and following a suitable period of induction, the role may include flexible Trust wide participation on an out of hours rota. Remuneration will be calculated based on the rota hours and intensity that you are working.
There are three acute general adult wards based at Green Parks House, Princess Royal University Hospital. These wards, Norman, Betts and Goddington admit both informal and detained patients. All are mixed sex wards.
The inpatient wards at Green Parks House successfully completed the College Research Unit’s accreditation programme for inpatient units in 2008. The focus of all the acute wards is on multi-disciplinary team assessment and treatment of mental illness through a range of treatments and collaborative care. Treatment will be achieved with high levels of observation and a range of treatment strategies, including pharmacological and psychological approaches, within a safe and secure environment.
Within Bromley there is an Older Persons’ Mental Health Team based at the Bridgeways Day Hospital and a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team. There are also a range of community mental health teams including an Early Intervention in Psychosis Team, Primary Care Plus Team (PCP), an Anxiety, Depression and Personality Trauma Team (ADAPT), an Intensive Case Management in Psychosis Team (ICMP) and a Crisis Resolution based at Beckenham Beacon and Home Treatment Team based at Green Parks House.

The appointee will work with a multidisciplinary team with representation from a wide range of other specialties including nursing, mental health social work, psychology and occupational therapy.
Workload and Responsibilities
Day to day duties will include;
• Contributing to the day to day care of inpatients providing emergency duty cover to other wards
• Working with the Mental Health Liaison Teams as duty doctor
• Clerking of patients referred to the MHL Teams and those admitted to the inpatient wards in the psychiatric inpatient unit
• Outpatient clinics work under supervision, following up investigations, monitoring and documenting patient progress and response to interventions.
• Facilitating discharge arrangements including writing discharge summaries
• Liaison with medical and surgical wards in the acute hospital
• Duty Bleep (i.e. day time on call responsibilities) to other inpatient wards including older adult
Development Opportunities
• Develop skills in history taking and mental state examination
• Formulation of management plans
• Understanding of basic psychopharmacology and rapid tranquilisation
• Understanding the use of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
• Understanding Multi Disciplinary Team working

• Learning to work with advocates/other agencies/other health care professionals and organisations including primary care.
• Learning the principles of CBT in inpatient population groups
This post offers a wide range of learning opportunities for more experienced candidates, with sound support and supervision arrangements.
You will gain experience in managing a wide range of conditions affecting working age adults in an inpatient setting including depressive disorders, anxiety, psychosis, substance use and behavioural problems and adjustment disorders. There is opportunity to observe the complex interplay between physical ill-health and mental illness through close liaison with teams based on the Older Adults wards and other departments on various sites.
Senior medical input is provided by the consultant and a Higher Specialty Trainee, who will provide additional clinical supervision to assist you with clinical casework and decision making.
Induction
You will receive an induction to introduce you to the Trust generally and you will also receive local induction into the individual workplaces and be informed of the requirements of your post, including the nature of your ‘out of hours’ commitment.
Clinical Supervision
Post holder will be given clinical supervision by the nominated local Consultant.
Contracted Hours
You will be required to work Monday to Friday 40 hours per week. You may be required for out-of-hours duties. When working on an out of hours rota, you will also work evening shifts (17:00 – 21:15), Nights (21:00-09:15) and Weekends (09:00-21:15). You will receive additional remuneration for hours worked over a normal 40 hour working week.
