Role Summary
This exciting yearlong post will allow a core level surgical trainee to run the surgical simulation facility in the Health Surgical Research Unit (HeSRU); the year can be extended. There will be opportunities to run quality improvement projects as part of this year. There is an active surgical research programme in Exeter and several other fellows that the post-holder can work with. It is likely that the post holder will be able to present and publish and there is financial support for attending training and conferences. From a clinical perspective the post holder would be part of the colo-rectal unit.
The post-holder will take a full share of the on-call rota and be expected to provide service support for the colo-rectal firm. One day a week will be free to run the Simulation Suite and take part in other projects. There will be opportunities to attend day case and main theatre operating lists.
The post-holders will be mentored by a practicing consultant surgeon who has specific time allocated to this. The posts will start from August 5 for twelve months. The post holders will be fully on the on-call SHO rota; a 1: full shift pattern. The on-call team consists of a consultant, registrar, SHO and F1. In addition, there will be approx. days service commitment over a week rota cycle but the rest of the time will be free for work on the simulation facility.
Annual and Study Leave is with prior arrangement and there is internal prospective cover on each surgical firm.

The Exeter Colorectal Unit provides a full range of colorectal services. The following subspecialties are therefore covered:
* Core colorectal surgery and diagnostics
* Advanced Pelvic oncology
* Functional bowel disease/Pelvic Floor Disease
* Intestinal failure and complex inflammatory bowel disease including pouch surgery.
* Problem stomas
* Complex abdominal wall reconstruction surgery
The Colorectal team as of August 5 will consist of consultant surgeons who form the integrated Emergency General Surgery rota in addition to 6 Upper GI surgeons.
Working Pattern: Oncall (days and nights), clinics, wards and research
