The Gardening Services provides a high-quality service to maintain the grounds and gardens of The Christie NHSFT Withington site and portfolio of off-site properties to provide a safe and pleasant external environment.
The Technical Support Worker – Grounds & Gardens will assist in providing support with the maintenance of the grounds and gardens as well as the upkeep of the mowed lawns, general grassed areas and wild gardens, low maintenance borders ornamental flowering borders and trees.
Working alongside and under the Head Gardeners instruction to undertake general horticultural duties such as seasonal planting.
Along with the above tasks additional daily various types of work including road sweeping and litter/debris collection as well as snow clearing and gritting of the footpaths and roads.
The work relates to both domestic and specialist commercial aspects of grounds & gardens maintenance.

1) Undertake grass mowing of ornate lawns, general areas using hand and ride-on grass cutting machinery.
2) Preparation, pruning and seasonal planting of decorative borders using mechanical rotovators, tractor/trailer and ranger vehicle.
3) Hedge trimming and strimming to gradients and, edges and embankments.
4) General upkeep of horticultural areas (Shrubs and planted flower boarders)
5) Road sweeping, litter/debris, the emptying of bins across the main site and off-site properties by hand and with machinery.
6) Gritting of footpaths and roads during adverse winter weather conditions.
7) To complete daily and weekly maintenance and service tasks of garden machinery.
8) Undertake unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work within the building discipline.
9) Participate in ad hoc local arrangements for snow clearing and gritting when weather conditions dictate outside out of hours working.
10)Support Estate personnel in assisting/liaising with site customers and contractors.
11)To work with all Estates Supervisors and managers in the management of Risks. This will include working to agreed Risk Assessments and assisting in the development of additional Risk Assessments.
12)Advise the Head Gardener regarding plant and equipment failure, identify materials required to complete tasks and to call for external contractors as and when required.
13)Carry out all duties in a professional and conscientious manner.
14)Wear The Christie NHSFT maintenance service uniform, identification badges and personal protective equipment at all times.
15)Carry out work in line with all trust policies including but not extensive to:
a. Patient areas
b. Working at heights
c. Confined spaces
d. Radiation controlled areas
e. Hostile environments
f. Permit-to-Work / Safe Systems of Work
16)Undertake training where necessary to learn new techniques.
17)To be skilled in the safe use of all relevant hand tools and equipment.
18)Undertake training where necessary to learn new techniques.
19)Understand fully the inter-relationship between the various maintenance and facilities functions.
20)Demonstrates the agreed set of values and accountable for own attitude and behaviour.
