This is an exciting chance to take-up one half of a jobshare partnership, with an established SCS jobshare partner, to lead a team undertaking analysis for the Trade Policy, Implementation and Negotiations (TPIN) Group.
TPIN work to balance the UK’s regulatory sovereignty and trade liberalisation, ensuring coherence between the UK’s domestic policy approach and its international economic priorities. The Trade Agreements and Policy Analysis team sits in one of the directorates within TPIN but supports the work of four directorates.
This is an exciting role at the heart of the UK’s trade policy programme. The team’s mission is to promote world class trade agreements, by better understanding and communicating their impacts. As Deputy Director you will jointly lead the Trade Agreements Analysis team, a mixed team of economists, social researchers, and statisticians.

* As part of a jobshare, lead a team of 35 staff setting a clear direction and programme of analytical work to support trade policy and negotiations; working as part of the senior leadership team to support staff to develop and maximize their potential and impact in an environment which encourages collaboration and innovation;
* Work closely with trade policy staff to providing cross cutting advice to Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and lead negotiators on the economic impacts and trade-offs between different trade policy measures. Help them to develop and deploy their understanding of how trade and investment contribute to UK prosperity, improving DBTs impact and reputation as an evidence-led economic department.
* Support trade negotiations, including ensuring consistent and coherent analysis across UK departments and sectors, helping the development of negotiating mandates, understanding the value of different options to the UK and partner countries, and trade-offs; and supporting negotiators to use statistics, analysis and innovation to shape the dynamics of negotiations;
* Represent the UK internationally, including leading delegations to meet trade analysts in partner countries, develop both unilateral and shared analysis of trade opportunities with partner countries and blocs, and leading or participating in bilateral working groups.
* Build strong and effective working relationships with senior analytical stakeholders across Whitehall and externally, for example trade policy experts in business organisations, think tanks, universities, WTO, OECD, etc.
* Actively participate in the Trade Policy Group Leadership team to build the analytical community and capability.
* Form a key part of the Senior Management Team of the Trans-Pacific Negotiations and Policy Directorate.
* Oversee a research budget. You will lead your team in proposing research ideas for funding,and oversee the budget for individual research projects.
* Deliver innovative impact assessment of new trade agreement to support parliamentary activity and scrutiny, and public communications.
