The Department
This is a crucial and exciting role, offering significant scope for the appointee to build on the work of the previous Head of Learning Support within a thriving and popular department.
The department currently occupies four dedicated classrooms in a pleasant garden setting. The Head of Learning Support currently manages two Literacy/Numeracy staff and a full-time EFL Teacher.
The Role
1. Lead and manage the provision for learning support across the school.
2. Maintain an oversight of the work and performance of a team of specialist SpLDs and EAL staff. Conduct annual performance reviews with each, which will involve observing lessons, setting and reviewing targets, planning for further professional training etc.
3. Advise the Headmistress and Deputy Head (Academic) on staffing issues and needs as well as suitability of potential Pupil applicants to the school.
4. Ensure close liaison with Admissions for new Pupils.
5. Take part in the process of advertising for and interviewing new staff.
6. Organise Educational Psychologists and/or Psychiatrists assessments, to assist in identifying Pupils to manage their needs.
7. Analyse the results of the assessments, summarising the data and information and explaining it to teaching staff so that they can differentiate appropriately and make their lessons accessible and effective.
8. Make full use of the school’s information management system and other technology.
9. Plan, arrange and oversee the timetables for the Learning Support Department, ensuring that all Pupils who request and require support lessons may receive them at appropriate times.
10. Contribute to staff INSET sessions when required to impart relevant information.
11. Collate, monitor and communicate information about Pupils’ progress, both in sessions and in other lessons when Pupils are raised as causes for concern.
12. Work with Pupils, their tutors, Heads of Year and parents to help understand the results of assessments and how best to proceed in arranging support.
13. Teach one-to-one or small-group teaching of Pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, or Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH).
14. Fulfill all the other duties and expectations of a teacher as defined by the school contract.
15. Line manage the English as an Additional Language Department (EAL).
16. Arrange and conduct literacy and numeracy assessments for Pupils within the school.

Essential Criteria
1. Level 7 qualification or Honor's degree.
2. OCR Diploma Level 5 or 7 in SpLD or equivalent.
3. Experience of managing exams access arrangements for multiple exam boards.
4. Ability to read, understand and impart information from Educational Psychologists/Psychiatrists reports to colleagues.
5. Evidence of effectively using assessment data to inform optimal SEND provision.
6. Excellent organisational skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
7. Ability to work as part of a team in a successful department.
8. Ability to develop and sustain effective rapport and communication with pupils and staff.
9. Ability to manage and develop good relationships with parents, encouraging their involvement.
10. Evidence of continued professional development and awareness of wider educational developments.
11. Commitment to the schools safeguarding policies and procedures.
12. Commitment to the vision and values of Heathfield.
13. Commitment to participation in the Co-curricular programme and duties required by the school.
Desirable Criteria
1. Qualified Teacher Status.
2. National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENDCO). If you are an experienced SEND Teacher, you can still be considered but may be required to complete the training within three years of taking up the post.
3. Ability to devise strategies to ensure aspirational Pupil achievement.
4. Ability to demonstrate excellent teaching practices against the current Teaching Standards.
5. Willingness to be a form tutor.
