This is a 12 month FTC, Maternity Cover contract.
We are looking to expand our picture desk and are seeking a Weekend Photo Assignment Editor to help assign and coordinate our photo coverage in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
You will work closely with the Chief Photographer and the entire bureau, including text and TV, to ensure that global and national news of interest to Reuters editorial customers is covered in a timely manner, delivered ahead of our competitors, and conforms to Reuters’ standards of quality and ethics.
You will be crucial to how we react to breaking news and will ensure we have the right people in the right places at the right time. The role will involve planning and coordination of both breaking news and coverage of events we’ve planned for months in advance.
We are looking for a responsible self-starter with a passion for news, excellent communication and organizational skills, an unflappable temperament, and an ability to effectively prioritize news and tasks. Written accuracy and attention to detail are key requirements of the job.
About the Role
In this opportunity as a Photo Assignment Editor, you will:
* Monitor local media and day-to-day news schedules across the UK and Ireland, assigning photographers throughout the day and ensuring that our Newsplanner is up to date with accurate coverage plans written in accordance with Reuters Style guidelines.
* Maintain and update the long-term schedules for Reuters photographers and contractors.
* Coordinate coverage of all pooled opportunities through the WPA and keep the Global Pictures Desk informed of what pool pictures they will need to expect and when.
* Write captions, adhering to Reuters-style, for any breaking news or large pre-planned events where a live edit is necessary.
* Perform advance planning and booking of travel for all the events covered, in coordination with the UKI Chief Photographer.
* Secure credentialed access in a timely manner and work closely on a daily basis with all assets of the UKI bureau to assure quality multimedia coverage.
* Discuss ideas with peers in the UKI bureau to identify stories that will give our product more value. You’ll also network with local organizations and government institutions, maintaining good relations to secure access.
* Work efficiently with Microsoft Excel, communicate effectively with the teams across pictures, text, and TV, and have a meticulous eye for detail on all desk administration.
* Liaise with the Global Pictures Desk for live editing of breaking news coverage and assist the Action Images Chief Photographer in scheduling Reuters Photographers’ sports coverage.
* Apply for and renew photographer press cards.
