Job description
Title: Associate Molecular Biologist, 40 hours per week – AMB001.
Location: White City, London, UK.
Compensation: £29.5-39.5k plus equity, pension, health insurance and free lunch.
Posted date: February 19th, 2025.
Closing date: March 19th, 2025.
Start date: Expected April 21st, 2025, or before.
Company: Esox Biologics is a bio-tech company ensuring food security by improving the efficiency of aquaculture. We do this by preventing the spread of infectious diseases among aquatic animals. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector, yet aquatic veterinary medicine lacks innovative tools to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Our solution is ‘Detect. Predict. Prevent’. We sequence the genome of every microorganism on aquatic farms to improve pathogen detection. The proprietary genomic data we collect enables us to predict pathogen virulence factors which informs the development of novel vaccines that prevent disease.
Role: We are hiring an Associate Molecular Biologist to join our London team for a full-time, lab-based role. Our Detect platform enables clients to identify total microbiomes sampled from livestock and the environment surrounding each aquatic farm. We receive samples from a variety of environments in various forms and require total microbiomes to be isolated from each, preserving high molecular weight nucleic acids, and ensuring maximum yields. You’ll play a central role in delivering our commercial projects, onboarding client samples, extracting total nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), preparing libraries for metagenomic sequencing and conducting quantitative-PCR. You will be expected to work independently, managing your time effectively, ensuring your work aligns with wider company objectives. You will relay your findings to management and support them in delivering our commercial obligations.
Team: Esox Biologics is tight-knit and highly collaborative team of scientists, engineers and communicators with a passion for translating innovative technologies into real-world solutions. Backed by private equity and generating revenue through our initial products, Esox Biologics is set to establish its position within the aquatic veterinary medicine sector by transforming existing knowledge of aquatic microbiomes.
Responsibilities
* Sample onboarding: You will co-ordinate with our Operations Manager to assess the volume of incoming samples each week, account for their presence and store them appropriately.
* Nucleic acid extraction and purification: You will follow our protocols and extract total nucleic acids from a variety of sample types, ensuring rigorous quality control.
* Library preparation: You will liaise with the lab team to identify which samples will proceed for metagenomic sequencing and prepare libraries accordingly.
* qPCR: Certain samples may require qPCR analysis. You will set-up qPCR panels, execute the assays and return the data in a format required by the wider team.
* Laboratory management: You will ensure the maintenance and smooth operation of our lab. You will follow good laboratory practices, maintain hygiene, inventory and sample management and ensure our quality control standards are met.
Requirements
Essential:
* A degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or equivalent with at least one year of relevant experience.
* A proven track-record of executing molecular biology experiments.
* Experience in molecular biology techniques including total nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) extractions and PCR/qPCR/RT-qPCR.
* Excellent problem-solving skills, with a capacity for creative and innovative thinking in a collaborative environment.
* Strong independent work ethic.
* Candidates must have the right to work and live in the UK. We are unable to sponsor visas currently.
Desirable:
* Familiar with designing and implementing experimental plans and protocols on Benchling or equivalent software.
* Experience extracting high molecular-weight nucleic acid libraries from complex animal and environmental samples.
* Experience with Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
* A passion for aquaculture, aquatic organisms, and sustainable food systems.
All staff at Esox Biologics are expected to contribute towards our enjoyable work environment by treating colleagues and partners with respect.
