What we’re looking for: We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Automation Scientist to join our R&D team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in instrumentation setup, workflow design and process implementation and optimisation, and will have a passion for driving pioneering research through automation. This role will work across our R&D function from DNA sequencing library preparation and strain construction to culture tracking, biomolecule preparation and analysis. Responsibilities: Designing, developing and optimising automation workflows for laboratory processes and experiments. This includes proposing approaches, equipment purchases and software tools, through to their implementation. Creating and adapting software tools and pipelines for streamlined data analysis. Troubleshooting new approaches and adapting to platform developments. Conducting feasibility studies to test validity of the proposed approaches. Evaluating impact of automation processes with qualitative and quantitative assessments. Training laboratory staff on proper use of automation systems. Collaborating with other teams to integrate new developments into future projects. Maintaining meticulous documentation of all work in line with Constructive Bio’s lab book standards. Staying up to date with latest developments and flagging opportunities for Constructive to improve its efficiency. Requirements: BSc/MSc/PhD in relevant scientific or engineering discipline (Biotechnology / Bioengineering / Mechanical Engineering / etc.). Expertise in molecular biology and protein science. Hands-on experience with robotic systems, liquid handling devices and/or lab instrumentation. Strong understanding of programming/scripting languages (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, JavaScript, or similar) for automating workflows. Experience with data analysis tools, such as R, MATLAB, or similar, for handling large datasets from automated systems. Proven ability to troubleshoot complex systems and resolve technical issues effectively. Familiarity with scientific workflows and laboratory processes in areas such as genomics, chemistry, or drug discovery. Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Desirable skills: Experience with high-throughput screening or assay development. Familiarity with laboratory management software or LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System). Experience with machine learning or AI-driven approaches for process optimization. Understanding of cloud-based platforms for data storage and processing. Knowledge of automated liquid handling, plate reading, and data acquisition systems.
