About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Graduate Electrical Design Engineer / Electrical Design Engineer to provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.
As a Graduate Electrical Design Engineer, you will assist, and develop the skills required, in the production of electrical system designs for a variety of projects including precision positioning controls for optical systems, vacuum control systems, machinery controls, safety circuits, and LV systems. You will also develop knowledge and skills required to use electrical CAD software and AutoCAD to produce schematics, hook-ups, and other electrical design documentation in support of the project requirements.
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will work closely with internal & external scientific and engineering staff to produce electrical systems designs for a variety of projects including motor control systems, vacuum control systems, electrical rack and panel design, low voltage distribution systems, and relay and interlock logic. You will use electrical CAD software and CAD to produce schematics, hook-ups, and other electrical design documentation.
Applicants will be considered at either 6 or 5 level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience, and qualifications.
About You
You will hold a bachelor’s degree in electrical and/or electronic engineering, or equivalent in a relevant discipline, as well as the ability to produce designs and specifications to appropriate standards and to oversee procurement, assembly, testing, and commissioning of electrical control systems.
You will have proven expertise and experience in 3 or more of the following areas:
* Control systems
* Automation
* System engineering

* Motion control
* Robotics
* PLCs
* Microcontrollers
* Vacuum technology
* PCB design/manufacture
* EMC
* Power supplies and power distribution
* Instrumentation and signal processing
* Pneumatic systems
* Regulatory / safety awareness
* Basic electrical safety awareness
* Knowledge of relevant regulatory framework and standards
* Knowledge of specialist system safety, e.g. machine safety, laser safety, gas safety
To be considered for the Electrical Design Engineer position, you will also have:
