The Suffolk Community Perinatal Mental Health team is a specialist county wide team supporting women and birthing people with moderate to severe mental health difficulties during the perinatal period. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems improving the experience of pregnancy and the postpartum period for women and birthing people, infants and their families.
We are looking to recruit an experienced Community Perinatal Nursery Nurse with excellent clinical skills and confidence to work autonomously with service users experiencing perinatal mental health challenges throughout Suffolk. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate and role model sound knowledge of caring effectively for infants under 1 year. They will be expected to support the team both through direct clinical work, and through consultation, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for infants, helping to ensure the infant is held in mind throughout the delivery of care.
The post holder will have a sound working knowledge of perinatal mental health problems and infant attachment. They will have experience of assessing and working with patients in a community setting and managing risk.
As the Lead Nursery Nurse you will fulfil the role of line manager to all nursery nurses within the team, promoting a flexible approach to working with mothers and their babies.
The Service operates Monday-Friday; 9.00am-5.00pm and covers all of Suffolk County.
Main duties of the job
Contribute to MDT decisions regarding care based on their knowledge and expertise. Participating in the assessment of needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of care plan for mothers and their babies. - Contribute to ensuring care is delivered in a patient centred framework involving service users, families and carers. - Contribute to ensure regulatory requirements are met and adhered to and fundamental standards of care are embedded into practice.
- Contribute to ensuring that service user and carer feedback contributes to the development and improvement of the service. - Promote a clinical learning environment, in collaboration with other senior clinicians. - Provide perinatal support to antenatal and post-natal mothers in the community, promoting and modelling a high standard of care at all times within the birth to five framework - Understanding the stages of development, assisting when difficulties are experienced and empowering families to be confident in their parenting and care. - To be part of the multi-disciplinary team utilising skills and knowledge in supporting and advising mums across all domains of caring for their baby. - Writing and reviewing care plan for the baby whilst mum is receiving support from the community team in collaboration with the family and MDT. - To maintain confidentiality and adhere to local policies at all times in line with Trust Policy., As lead nursery nurse you will be required to engage with the therapies team and support the team in running and implementing therapy based interventions focussed on supporting the infant's wellbeing and the mother and infant relationship. You will contribute to the development of standards of care for both mothers and babies within the Perinatal community team, proving feedback as necessary and taking positive steps toward implementing necessary change. You will be asked to contribute and deliver training in line with service need and development of the staff group.
You will be part an essential part of the multidisciplinary team providing an overview of the high level of care offered to both the mothers and their babies.
+ To provide support to mother's with babies during the perinatal period, applying specialist clinical knowledge relating to baby care and attachment models to promote infant mental health and well-being.
+ Supporting a small caseload of clients with complex perinatal mental health needs during their pregnancy and up to one year post-natally. These may be longstanding mental health problems or those presenting for the first time.
+ To deliver interventions in providing support to mothers and their families in caring for their babies developmental needs, promoting infant mental health and wellbeing.
+ To work creatively and sensitively to provide assessment and interventions to a vulnerable client group, supporting mother's to develop skills and awareness in the practical care of their baby.
+ To plan and participate in delivering group activities to support treatment plans, along with other professionals i.e. breast feeding groups, play group, mother and infant attachment sessions etc.
+ To support service users and colleagues in ensuring care plans are developed with consideration of their baby's well-being.
+ To be aware of and sensitive to the safeguarding needs of children and adults in their work, and knowledgeable both about potential indicators of abuse or neglect and about what to do if they had concerns about a child's or adult's welfare.
+ To provide teaching/advice to other professionals within the team sharing professional expertise.
+ To recognise and promote all aspects of culture diversity, devising baby care plans as guided by registered practitioner, that respond positively to ethnic awareness with sensitivity, where necessary
+ To be involved in joint assessments with Perinatal Practitioners, Team Leader and other clinicians to contribute to a care plan that includes the needs of the infant.
+ To ensure accurate and concise record keeping relating to both parents and babies as well as documenting interactions with external agencies where appropriate.
+ To provide written and verbal feedback relating to the mother's care of her baby and general feedback relating to the baby's well-being at clinical and local authority meetings.
+ To communicate in a clear and professional manner with all parents, colleagues and extended agencies involved in safeguarding of the baby.
+ To have close working links with our designated Mother and Baby unit, Kingfisher MBU
+ To also work in partnership with local health visiting teams, maternity services, children's centres, Children's services and adult mental health services
+ To participate in the teaching programme, clinical supervision and staff support groups to develop own and teams professional expertise.
+ To offer professional advice to other MDT service colleagues sharing professional expertise and to contribute to the shared learning about infant mental health
+ To provide written and verbal feedback relating to the mother's care of her baby and general feedback relating to the baby's well-being at clinical meetings such as care reviews.
+ To act at all times in safeguarding the integrity, confidentiality and availability of sensitive information relating to mothers and staff
+ To develop clinical knowledge in challenges relating to mental health difficulties presenting in the perinatal period. To understand the impact this may have with caring for one's baby
+ To provide line management supervision to other nursery nurses within the pathway
