Highways Engineer
Location: Nottingham
Salary: Up to £45k (DOE)
Our clients are seeking to grow their busy infrastructure team with the appointment of a Highways Engineer to assist with both their flood risk assessment (FRA), drainage and highway design capabilities working from their offices in Nottingham.
The team are working on a wide variety of interesting projects ranging from small residential schemes to new film production studios and garden village new settlements. They are looking for someone with anything between 2-5 years' experience, having worked primarily in the consultancy side of the industry on behalf of private developers, and ideally being proficient in the use of relevant drainage and 3D software.
Your workload will be varied, working under instruction from principal engineers and supporting them in preparing reporting (FRA's), SUDS strategies and drainage designs on some projects, and then S278 highway design and S38 designs on others.
The Highways Engineer role would therefore suit someone who is yet to have decided to focus on one aspect of engineering but keen to learn and develop their skills in all areas.
Highways Engineer Responsibilities:
• Carrying out desktop flood risk assessments on sites varying in size across all flood zones
• Producing surface and foul water drainage strategies and drawings, including SuDS strategies
• Preparing flood risk assessment and drainage strategy reports
• Undertake hydraulic drainage modelling using Infodrainage/Site 3D/Civils 3D
• Preparing responses to comments from the local planning authority/LLFA/highway authorities/RSA Teams etc
• Undertake detailed design of below ground drainage, including production of drawings
• Liaison with design team and stakeholders
• Making applications such as pre-application enquiries, S104/S106, EA consents, S278/S38 Etc
• Attendance at meetings (online and in person) with clients, contractors, and wider design team
• S278/S38 highway design.
Highways Engineer Knowledge/Experience:
• Production of original written drainage strategy reports and flood risk assessments
• Design of below ground drainage (surface and foul) for highways, commercial, retail, residential and industrial sectors including SuDS, to relevant standards
• Proficient in the use of relevant design software: AutoCAD, Civils 3D and/or Site 3D, Microdrainage and/or Infodrainage
• Awareness and understanding of relevant policies and guidance for drainage and SuDS, Highways
• Awareness and understanding of health and safety
• Experience in a range of sectors (commercial, residential, industrial, public realm etc)
• Good analytical, numerical and IT skills
• Knowledge of MfS and DMRB design standards
• Experienced in geometric designs for highway and road infrastructure such as junctions, roundabouts, footways/cycle lanes, car parks, etc. to relevant standards
• Experienced in 3D modelling using Civil3D and/or Site3D or similar software
• Experience in undertaking Vehicle swept path analysis
• At least a basic understanding of traffic assessment and various paving designs, including permeable paving
