Description Costain’s multi-discipline engineering and design team deliver design mainly across Costain projects. The design outputs range from studies to detailed design for permanent and temporary works. This team focus on the delivery of sustainable, safe-by-design outputs with a strong constructability ethos. We are seeking an experienced and technically focussed Principal Sustainability Engineer to join our cross sector Sustainable Engineering team. In this new and exciting role, you will provide technical assurance and expertise for carbon management across a variety of Costain projects and co-ordinate our internal carbon management processes ensuring compliance with client and industry standards. Your expertise in sustainable solution delivery will be used to provide technical insights for the delivery of sustainable solutions and support a network of sustainability professionals to ensure sustainable outcomes on our projects. This is a hybrid role offering dynamic working, based in our Manchester circa 2 days a week with infrequent site travel, other days will be working from home. Dynamic working provides flexibility as to where, when, and how employees work. Dynamic working will differ dependent on individual preferences, role requirements and team needs. Applicants must have or be eligible for UK Security Clearance. (UK citizen of 5 years UK residency) Whilst this role currently doesn’t involve line management responsibilities, the successful applicant will work closely with other team members (ranging from junior to principal) to provide technical advice. The successful applicant can expect to manage their time between four main areas: 1. Producing project carbon related deliverables, 2. Checking and approving carbon deliverables for the team, 3. Liaising between subject matter experts and industry partners on technical performance of low carbon/sustainable materials and/or products, 4. Working with internal processes and policies to ensure carbon management assurance. The successful applicant will work alongside other Principal Sustainability Engineer(s) within the team. Together, you will support the Discipline Manager in evolving the Sustainable Engineering team, ensuring continual improvement for technical competencies, and supporting the team to deliver project deliverables on time and within budget. LI-MR1 Responsibilities Supporting the Discipline Manager for Sustainable Engineering to assure Carbon Management and Sustainable Design across Costain projects. Undertaking technical assurance activities in accordance with Costain procedures, industry guidance and best practice. Activities may include delivering PAS2080 assurance reviews, checking and reviewing project deliverables, raising issues where appropriate and co-ordinating corrective actions when required. Dealing with technical concerns and challenges if they arise, which may include; investigating the veracity of sustainability claims, developing carbon assessments for novel materials and/or practices and exploring alternative methodologies. Supporting or leading technical workshops to identify carbon reduction opportunities with project teams. Deploying sustainable design principles and methodologies on complex infrastructure projects including familiarity with the IStructE Net Zero Design Hierarchy, ICE’s Low Carbon Concrete Roadmap, RICS Whole-life Carbon Assessment for the Built Environment and CIBSE TM65 & TM54 assessments. Stepping in to support projects to deliver carbon management and sustainable design when required. Considering and assessing the feasibility of sustainable solutions to ensure positive sustainable outcomes and provide technical evidence to support their integration. Reviewing and assessing Environmental Product Declarations provided by suppliers. Identifying opportunities for innovation and the incorporation of low carbon materials, assessing their viability and deploying where appropriate. Delivering Costain’s carbon management procedures in accordance with client and industry standards and contribute to the continued development and improvement of the Costain processes. Providing technical advice and support to the network of sustainability professionals across Costain. Communicating industry changes and updates when available with sustainability community across Costain. Deliver Technical Assurance communications through team meetings, lunch & learns and Technical training. Working with sustainability experts across the organisation including Biodiversity, Natural Capital, Social Value, SHE & Carbon to ensure the delivery of holistic solutions. Liaising with researchers, academia and suppliers to discuss & review novel designs & technologies which could be deployed on projects. Qualifications Chartered Engineer/Professional or significant experience of working at an equivalent level within infrastructure, engineering and construction industry Extensive experience and practical knowledge of PAS2080 and delivering Carbon Management on projects Strong analytical skills and attention to detail – including checking and approval of sustainability and carbon deliverables Strong stakeholder relationship skills – experience working with a variety of disciplines and project teams Detailed understanding of carbon factors and the development of carbon (GHG) assessments for infrastructure projects Experience working on complex multi discipline engineering projects delivering carbon management and sustainability in design and delivery settings. Awareness of broader sustainability concepts – including nature, biodiversity, natural capital, climate resilience and social value. Have UK project experience with a working knowledge of current UK regulations and design codes for H&S, environmental and engineering. Strong investigative / research skills. Able to demonstrate social responsibility awareness in the context of people, place and planet / ethics, community and environment. Have or be eligible for UK Security Clearance.
