The Opportunity
Project Background
The solid waste facility within the Harwell nuclear licensed site has been receiving wastes from this nuclear research for the last 50 years.
The tube stores at Harwell are being cleared of wastes using bespoke retrieval machines. Due to degradation of the waste containers, some of the tubes will still be contaminated to various degrees once the retrieval machine work is complete.
As a result, our client is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to drive the scope of the project to help develop the design, manufacture, test, install, and commission all plant and equipment required to enable the Post Operational Clean Out (POCO) of the Tube Stores such that they can be handed over for building decommissioning.
The POCO project has completed the optioneering phase and produced concept designs for the equipment to carry out specific tasks to allow the tubes to be decontaminated. The proposed process for tube decontamination is grit blasting with further options, including mechanical brush cleaning, to be considered if the current trials for grit blasting prove not to be effective.
The Role
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll provide point of contact with professional engineering colleagues and various stakeholders for discipline-related issues during the design lifecycle, contribute to design reviews, and ensure coordination and functionality of design.
This role has been deemed inside IR35.
Duration: 12 months (37 hour week over 4 days)
Your Duties and Responsibilities
1. Lead and support on a range of POCO equipment trial activities, recommend and review design updates.
2. Promote effective co-operation across Design and other functional teams.
3. Lead and assist on resolution of technical and delivery issues, such that the Technical Project Manager is fully briefed and informed of progress.
4. Assess the correct methods and tools for tasks and provide technical assistance to the wider team.
5. Contribute to the preparation/production of drawings in support of basic, detail, and production design in line with recognised ISO standards, to the required time, cost, and quality requirements.
This role is full-time, 37 hours per week, and is at our Harwell site in Oxfordshire. This role requires someone to be on site 4 days/week.
