This apprenticeship offers experience across grounds maintenance, soft landscaping (the establishment of plants in cultivated areas), hard landscaping (the establishment of hard surfaces and structures in addition to the establishment of plants in cultivated areas) and fencing.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
* Installation of various garden fence types
* Installation of various security fence types
* Installation of other timber products, for example sheds and decks
* Preparation and laying of turf to gardens, also including sowing of seed to larger areas
* Preparation and planting shrubs, trees, hedges to gardens and large open spaces
* To maintain commercial and residential spaces to YGS high standards, for example cutting hedges level, weed identification and killing, mowing grassed areas and cleaning down existing sites
* Use of various machinery to assist the role

* (Core) Apply health and safety processes and procedures including risk assessments and or construction design management (CDM), manual handling, legislative requirements and organisational policies. Follow safe systems of work and safety information in line with employer requirements or site context (for example clearing their route before transporting materials).
* (Core) Apply environmental mitigation measures including storage and disposal of waste, for example sorting materials for recycling or composting, acting in compliance with legal requirements, organisational policies and pollution controls.
* (Core) Select, undertake a pre start check, set up, clean, store and safely operate tools, equipment and machinery (including pedestrian controlled and handheld) in line with current legislation and business policies.
* (Core) Communicate with technical (for example supervisors or managers) and non-technical audiences (for example clients or the public) using language appropriate to the audience.
* (Core) Identify plants commonly grown in the UK by scientific names including genus species and or cultivar.
* (Core) Maintain the correct phytosanitary and bio-security procedures for the site, in accordance with legal requirements.

Your training plan
* L2 Horticulture or Landscape Construction Operative
* Training will take place through our various client base. Ranging from national housebuilders to domestic gardens. To include refurbishments, new housing estates, new retail parks and new business parks. You will be working with numerous commercial contractors, supporting and realising all types of developments
* This apprenticeship is in conjunction with City College Plymouth and you will attend College one day a week
* Qualifications include the following;
o Functional Skills in English and maths if required
o Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (Ofqual registered) minimum 1-day course
o (Horticulture Operative) Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Pesticides OR City and Guilds Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides
o (Horticulture Operative) Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticide Using Handheld Equipment OR City and Guilds Level 2 Award In The Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Handheld Equipment
o (Landscaping construction) City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Abrasive Wheel Machines or Lantra Abrasive Wheel Machines Course

Other requirements
Apprentices will work outside in all weathers. Often people new to the industry will start in a ‘hands-on’ role covering a range of practical tasks, with specialist skills being learnt through progression. A wide range of machinery and tools are used and additional training may be required depending on the nature of the work undertaken.
