Job overview
The Microbiology Department is looking for full time or part time Band 2 Medical Laboratory Assistants.
The successful candidates will be working in a team alongside Band 4 Associate Practitioners, Band 2 and 3 Medical Laboratory Assistants based at St Richards Hospital, Chichester, supporting the Band 6 and 7 Specialist Biomedical Scientists and reporting to the Microbiology Head Biomedical Scientist.
Main duties of the job
The individual will be expected to support the provision of a specialised, diagnostic Microbiology Laboratory service contributing to the clinical care of the patient, to enable diagnosis and subsequent monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment given.
The individual’s key responsibilities will include being fully competent to undertake routine processing and testing of specimens in the department, performing routine and advanced procedures and investigations as required.
The individual will need to be able to deal with telephone enquiries (seeking scientific advice where required); perform routine maintenance on instrumentation; provide routine & non-routine preparation of specimens; undertake work management to ensure reporting of results is conducted in the timeframes; work to ensure ongoing compliance with UKAS ISO 15189, audits, etc. and ensure compliance with the departmental Quality Policy & Manual.
This is very much a team of people working together to provide an excellent service to the Clinicians, Surgeons, and all our Patients.
The Microbiology team
The team is based at St Richard's Hospital and provides diagnostic testing for infectious diseases for a variety of sample types from patients attending Hospitals, Clinics, and GP surgeries across West Sussex.

In addition, the post-holder will be expected to participate in the Saturday and Bank Holiday rota.
There is also a possibility that the candidate may be needed to work at the BSUH site or Princes Royal as integration between the sites in UHSussex continues.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience

* Ability to work in a manner that is both safe to themselves and others within the laboratory environment.
* Demonstrable abilities to use IT, including Windows-based software – in particular Word and Excel.
* Ability to understand the fundamentals of data quality, data protection, and the confidential use of patient information.
* GCSE Maths minimum Grade C or equivalent
* GCSE English minimum Grade C or equivalent
* NVQ2 or equivalent award
* Evidence of ongoing CPD (Continuing Professional Development).
* Ability to use a Pathology LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
* Ability to utilise a HIS (Hospital Information System) and a computerised quality management system such as Q-Pulse.
* Ability to use a Laboratory Specimen Tracking System.
* Experience of participating in the testing of equipment.
* Experience of conducting audits.
* Demonstrable good hand-writing, reading and numeracy skills.
* Experience using relevant laboratory instrumentation utilised within the department.
