What does the role involve?
You will work alongside support staff to guide them and teach them the skills to be pro-active in order to enhance the quality of life of everyone that we support. You will work with Aldanat’s Behaviour Advisor to ensure RRN standards are followed and to provide a high-quality care for adults with complex needs with minimal restriction. You will assist to maximise service user outcomes by working closely with the service user, their family and friends, staff and involved professionals.
PBS is about working in partnership with people, treating them with dignity and respect and understanding what behaviours of concern tell us so that the person’s needs can be met in pro-active ways to reduce the need for restrictions and enhance their quality of life with active skills teaching and meaningful activities.
PBS is an evidence-based framework for supporting individuals, the primary goal is to enhance or increase the person’s quality of life; reductions in challenging behaviour are a natural side effect of this – Especially important for people with behaviours of concern. The people we support being involved in the planning of their support, Reducing, or removing the reasons for behaviours of concern. It focusses on being Pro-active rather than Reactive.
The nature of the role requires the postholder to demonstrate active listening and the ability to employ positive, calm, and clear communication. You should be able to support in stressful situations, you will need to remain calm and in control whilst supporting the service user in the least restrictive and most respectful way.
The PBS Support Worker will be responsible for ensuring that current guidance is adhered to, including risk assessments, support plans, PBS plans and other forms of behaviour assessment/observation and intervention management as indicated by the Behaviour Advisor. The post holder will also be required to ensure that all requested/required documentation is completed and returned and to work with the Behaviour Advisor and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach. To coach and support staff to successfully embed the principles of positive behaviour support. To work independently under the supervision of the Behaviour Advisor and within the overall framework of policies and procedures.
What skills do I need?
We are looking for candidates with experience of working with adults with a learning disability and/or autism who are able to manage behaviours of concern. Good communication and interpersonal skills are important for this post; as you will be required to work with a range of professionals as well as families and carers.
Knowledge of positive behaviour support interventions is important as well as an understanding of social care in particular in relation to safeguarding practice.
We are looking for people who are friendly, patient, compassionate and honest. Consistency and trust are very important in the work that we do, so reliability is key. The role is focused on building relationships, creating opportunities, and encouraging people to achieve their goals. We are ideally looking for people with experience of supporting people with complex needs, positive behaviour support and experience of behaviour of concern.
You will need experience of working in a fast-paced environment and be able to manage your time and tasks effectively to meet the needs of the service on that day. You should have good computer skills and be able to support others in written tasks as needed. You will need to be able to use a computer and have experience of an online platform to document daily notes etc. You will need a good telephone manner and be able to effectively converse with outside professionals in an effective way.
