What's involved with this role: Interim Senior Engineer - Highways Service Job Ref: Bradford 5265172 Pay Rate: £38.96 per hour PAYE Hours per week: 40 Monday – Friday, normal working hours Role Length: This opening assignment is for 2-3 months City: Bradford Your role involves conducting feasibility studies, public engagement, design, inspections, assessments, procurement, construction supervision, and project management for a range of highway, structural, traffic management, and civil engineering projects. You will support internal and external clients across various programs. You will also provide advice to elected members, MPs, and key stakeholders, while assisting the Principal Engineer with servicing Council committees, neighbourhood forums, and public engagement events. Key duties: Provide expert advice and solutions to complex engineering and procurement problems, including recommendations for improvements secured through legal agreements with third parties. Undertake technical checks and certify the compliance of third-party engineering information with established standards and Council requirements. Conduct investigations, feasibility studies, and prepare concept designs, transportation studies, and transport assessments, including schemes arising from Local Transport Plans and external funding sources. Oversee and/or carry out detailed design of civil, structural, and highway engineering schemes, ensuring they meet required standards. Lead procurement, contract administration, and construction supervision, ensuring compliance with safety, contract conditions, and specifications. Manage contractual matters, including negotiations, claims resolution, and final account preparation. Key requirements: HNC/D in Civil Engineering (pre-1999 intake) or related discipline OR BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineer (post 1999 intake) OR NVQ Level 6 in Civil Engineering OR other qualification certified by the Engineering Council UK as an academic base Incorporated Engineer status Driving Licence - may be required Demonstrate understanding in the use of technical software appropriate to the role (eg Micro Drainage, Hydro Works, AutoCAD, Aimsum, SATURN, PICADY, ARCADY, LinSig) Demonstrate understanding of working in a highway engineering design office environment Demonstrate understanding of carrying out highways construction and maintenance Demonstrate understanding of Local Transport Plan process Minimum 2 years’ experience in a senior capacity in a large engineering organisation. Demonstrate project planning and management skills. Able to make practical application of traffic and road safety legislation (e.g. Highways Act 1980, Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Road Traffic Act 1988) Able to identify, develop and design Traffic and Road Safety and Transportation Improvement Schemes. Able to analyse and interpret traffic related data (flow, speed, accidents etc.) when appraising and designing schemes.
