As an Application Developer, you will be part of the wider Application Management Services (AMS) team, who provide support and development for our clinical systems, electronic patient record and Microsoft 365 platform. In this role, you will be responsible for system configuration and developing functionality to deliver solutions that assist Trust staff in their day-to-day activities.
Working within a large service-driven organisation, you will maintain services and develop solutions that support both frontline and back-office staff, ultimately contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care within the NHS. You will collaborate with a large diverse, multi-skilled team, leveraging your skills by working together towards common goals and objectives.
Main duties of the job
Participating in all phases of the software development lifecycle including analysis, design, development, testing, documentation, implementation, and support whilst ensuring that the system adheres to all relevant policies, standards, and procedures.
Liaising with all groups of staff affected by the solution developments that you are working on. System developments support clinical and administrative processes associated with the delivery of patient care and will therefore have a direct impact upon the staff and patients using the system.
Monitoring of systems and services, performing routine checks and maintenance to ensure business continuity.
Delivering first and second line support capabilities as demand dictates, working with all groups of staff to resolve reported issues in an efficient manner.
Working on EPR activities including Bridges Interfaces.
About us
The AMS team is responsible for supporting and developing integrated IT solutions that facilitate the Trust's day-to-day activities. This includes utilising key third-party IT systems as well as bespoke development. The team provides support services essential to the Trust's core activities, including:
* over 40 interfaces to Clinical and GP systems
* inpatient, outpatient and breast screening reminder texts and rule-based alerts for abnormal lab results and patient activity for managed cohorts of patients
* user management and support for over 5,000 users
* core patient activity e.g. 24,000 patient letters, activity for over 700 inpatient episodes and over 2,500 care plan summaries per month
* custom legacy apps and ad hoc work such as upgrading macros, access databases and other unsupported solutions developed externally to the HIS department
* management and development of the Microsoft 365 platform
Job responsibilities
* Working closely with members of the AMS team, other system support teams, suppliers and the wider HIS teams, utilising clear communication channels and toolsets to deliver the teams day to day activities
* Communicating with end users of systems supported by the AMS team, assessing their needs/issues and actioning accordingly to ensure resolution, escalating to colleagues, or reassigning as and when required
* Liaising with colleagues to ensure team commitments can be met, providing cover for absence resulting from annual leave, sickness etc. or support where needed
* Participate in Team, Directorate and Departmental meetings with staff from various groups/areas
* Understanding the escalation path for issues and escalating to senior colleagues or managers in a timely manner
* Cross train team in areas of expertise. Support junior members of the team to extend their skills and knowledge. Train end users in areas of expertise, demonstrate new functionality to project teams

Person Specification
Qualifications and training
* Educated to degree level or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant subject, and/or equivalent work gained experience
* Computer literate e.g. proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications etc. with the ability to master new software applications
* Training in an IT related subject or equivalent work experience/knowledge
* Bridges Certification
Knowledge and experience
* Demonstrable knowledge of programming using a modern programming language
* Knowledge of Database Structure and design
* Demonstrable knowledge of SQL database queries
* Knowledge of web technologies such as HTML, CSS and Java Script
* Knowledge of Microsoft 365 technologies including Power Platform
* Demonstrable experience of supporting and/or developing one or more of the following systems: Infoflex; Clinical Portal/Healthshare; South Devon Legacy Apps; Ensemble/Healthshare Connect
* Understanding of systems integration, interfacing, web services and the NHS Interoperability Toolkit, and knowledge of integration products such as Ensemble, Cloverleaf
* Knowledge of the Health Level 7 (HL7) messaging protocol acquired through training or relevant experience
* Experience with using Intersystems Healthshare product sets
* Experience of using or supporting a Health Information Exchange/Clinical Portal
* Understanding and experience of current IT solutions and associated processes within the South Devon Health Community
* Understanding and experience of working operationally in a complex NHS Trust
* Experience of being part of a process capture/service redesign team
* Knowledge of IT solutions widely used within the Acute and/or Community Healthcare environments
* Experience of healthcare computing in the NHSI / T
