The Role
Job Overview:
We are looking for an FPGA / Embedded-Systems Engineer to join Arm’s Solution Engineering FPGA Design team on a permanent basis. The team is based in Cambridge and Manchester, UK working at the forefront of Arm based embedded design.
We are an FPGA design team delivering ASIC prototypes on FPGA platforms internally and externally in support Arm’s IP business model, based around Arm’s leading CPU and system IP solutions. These platforms are used for software development and IP validation activities both internally by Arm and externally by partners/customers.
The role will involve building a detailed technical understanding of incoming Arm IP RTL designs and making the relevant design changes to construct an FPGA prototype of this ASIC RTL, on FPGA.
You'll be part of a project team associated with delivery of the prototype, working collaboratively to create an FPGA prototype for enablement and validation, working with verification and software engineers. You’ll have responsibilities estimating and owning tasks, delivering against a plan and have a strong focus on engineering efficiency and quality.
The role includes RTL creation and modification along with implementation constraints with high-quality, clear, accurate technical documentation. Familiarity with writing and reviewing documentation is desirable. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of designs using techniques such as gated clock conversion and synthesizable models to build accurate representations of real-world systems.
Responsibilities:
1. Modifying RTL from large complex systems to target a dedicated FPGA prototyping platform
2. Working collaboratively as part of a project team to deliver to a structured plan
3. Mentoring of more junior engineers.
4. Liaise and collaborate with development teams, where required, to understand requirements and guide design decisions, ensuring these are implemented and where not possible/feasible providing mitigations and alternatives.
5. Translating technical requirements into estimated and sized packages of work that are direct inputs in forming a resourced project plan.
6. Taking ownership, for your tasks, tracking to the project plan, identifying, and managing risks and reporting status
7. Developing FPGA implementations targeting both our internal platforms and 3rd party platforms to demonstrate Arm’s latest IP products.
8. Commissioning of FPGA prototyping hardware including specification of peripheral hardware.
Required Skills and Experience:
Solid FPGA Engineer with strong technical skills are important for this role! Design automation is critical when constructing efficient design and delivery flows, scripting skills in Python and TCL would be advantageous.
9. Detailed knowledge of the FPGA design flow from RTL design, simulation, synthesis, place & route, constraints, and timing closure
10. Strong RTL skills in Verilog / System Verilog or VHDL.
11. Knowledge and expertise in debugging sophisticated designs in both simulation and hardware.
12. Excellent communications skills, written and spoken English; ability to write coherent documentation.
“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience:
13. Demonstrate an understanding of ASIC/SoC prototyping in FPGA.
14. A creative and structured approach to problem-solving.
15. Working with the latest Xilinx UltraScale+ devices and tools.
16. Knowledge/Experience of implementation of DDR memory sub-systems.
17. Programming languages such as: assembly language (ideally Arm assembler), higher-level ( C), object-orientated ( C++)
18. Use of a UNIX environment and shell programming
19. Scripting skills in Python, Tcl, etc.
20. Experience and knowledge of Arm IP and the AMBA standard.
