Job Description: Wireman – National Grid Substation Position: Wireman Job Summary: The Wireman at a National Grid Substation plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient installation, maintenance, and operation of electrical wiring and connections within the substation. This position requires expertise in working with high-voltage electrical systems, adherence to strict safety standards, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a high-stakes environment. Key Responsibilities: Installation & Maintenance: Install, test, and maintain electrical wiring, circuits, and control systems within substations. Ensure all wiring and installations are up to National Grid standards, including compliance with safety regulations and electrical codes. Assist with the installation and commissioning of new electrical equipment and systems. Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair electrical wiring faults or defects within the substation infrastructure. Safety & Compliance: Follow strict safety procedures and protocols when working in high-voltage environments. Conduct routine safety checks of electrical installations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Ensure all work is completed in line with the national grid safety policy and local regulatory guidelines. Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety measures to protect oneself and others from electrical hazards. System Testing & Troubleshooting: Test electrical systems and wiring to ensure proper functioning and performance. Identify and diagnose electrical faults or malfunctions within the wiring and associated equipment. Assist with the isolation, de-energizing, and testing of electrical circuits during maintenance or emergency situations. Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of wiring installations, maintenance activities, and repairs conducted within the substation. Prepare reports on completed tasks, faults encountered, and any corrective actions taken. Ensure all work is documented in compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements. Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with other electrical engineers, technicians, and maintenance staff to ensure smooth operation and system reliability. Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding ongoing work, safety concerns, and operational issues. Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required. Required Skills and Qualifications: Education: Completion of an apprenticeship or formal training in electrical installation or a related field. Relevant certification in electrical wiring or installation (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent). Experience: Previous experience working as a Wireman or Electrician, particularly in high-voltage substation or electrical infrastructure environments. Experience with substation wiring, installation, maintenance, and testing is highly desirable. Knowledge & Abilities: Strong knowledge of electrical codes, safety standards, and regulations related to high-voltage systems. Ability to work with electrical tools, equipment, and testing devices such as multimeters, insulation resistance testers, and cable splicing kits. Excellent troubleshooting skills for diagnosing electrical faults. Good understanding of control systems, electrical circuits, and transformer operations. Physical Requirements: Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including outdoor and confined spaces. Comfortable working at heights or in challenging weather conditions. Good manual dexterity and the ability to use hand and power tools safely. Desired Attributes: Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to safety.
