The Role: The Laboratory Technician will provide core technical support to our scientists. Day to day activities will include overseeing the various laboratories within the business and assisting the Laboratory Operations team in laboratory administration, maintenance, and supporting their smooth running whilst adhering to Health and Safety policies and procedures. Key roles and responsibilities: • General laboratory housekeeping including glass washing, autoclaving, legionella tap flushing, and fridge and freezer checks. • Performing routine laboratory maintenance activities including equipment maintenance, calibration, regular maintenance and cleaning of microbiological safety cabinets, incubators and water baths. • Supporting Laboratory Operations with deliveries, shipments, procurement and stock management. • Disposal of chemical and biological waste in accordance with company and local regulations, and co-ordination of recycling schemes for laboratory areas. • Preparing media and buffers. • Procurement of consumables to maintain stock room inventory. • Organisation and co-ordination of the laundering of lab coats. • Co-ordination of dry ice deliveries for the laboratories. • Ensuring all safety guidelines are adhered to, maintain a clean and orderly environment and contribute towards ensuring safety and HTA regulations and guidelines are adhered to as required. • Support the maintenance of sample inventories. Knowledge and skills: Essential • Experience as a lab technician or other relevant position. • Knowledge of the selection and safe use of chemicals and biological materials. • Ability to operate laboratory equipment. • Working knowledge of MS Office. • Good numeracy skills. • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Good time management skills. • The ability to maintain detailed records. • Excellent attention to detail. Desirable • Ability to perform basic plate-based assays such as BCA, mycoplasma testing and assisting with sample preparation. • Experience in aseptic techniques and proficient in mammalian cell culture. • Knowledge of decontamination practices for laboratory areas and associated equipment. • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field or relevant experience.
