An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and clinically focused pharmacist to practice rural general pharmacy in the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick. This will provide you with the chance to practice patient-centred care over a broad range of clinical specialities whilst at the same time being able to engage fully in the development of clinical pharmacy services across the Shetland Islands.
Supervision, training and support will be available to help you undertake post-registration foundation training, through an educational supervisor and from the wider pharmacy team. Peer support and networking is available through the Highlands and Islands Pharmacy Education and Research Centre in Inverness, which links post-registration pharmacists throughout the region and provides a platform for discussion and development.
The Gilbert Bain Hospital provides acute care for island residents and visitors, and off-shore emergencies, covering all disciplines. Additionally, it delivers outpatient care through local and visiting specialists, which includes pharmacist-run clinics. You will join a team of like-minded professionals delivering a breadth of care for a wide variety of clinical presentations. You will be working as part of the integrated pharmacy team which includes pharmacists, technicians and support workers in both acute and primary care, who will work with you to help deliver effective seamless care and improve patient journeys. NHS Shetland is a supportive and welcoming organisation and you will quickly get to know and feel part of the hospital and broader team.
The Shetland Islands are home to 23,000 people; an abundance of amazing wildlife, breath-taking natural beauty and a thriving, forward-looking and welcoming community. Shetland has a rich cultural heritage whilst also being home to dynamic creative industries and a buoyant local economy. Amongst stunning coastal landscapes, you will find welcoming, active communities served by exceptional services; well-equipped leisure centres; delicious cafes and restaurants; and a cinema and arts venue. The hospital is in the main town of Lerwick with a population of around 7500 residents, with the total population split across 15 inhabited islands, with a range of sizes and healthcare needs. Lerwick harbour is a base for a thriving fishing industry, and the town plays host to many visitors from cruise ships during summer months.
You should be enthusiastic, caring, collaborative, flexible and innovative; rural pharmacy presents unique challenges and opportunities, making every day interesting.
You will be required to participate in an on-call rota and may be required to work occasional public holidays.
Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity - Shetland is a wonderful place to live and work, while only a short flight away from the UK mainland. To find out more about living and working in Shetland go to www.shetland.org.
