We are seeking a dynamic Head of Facilities to lead the Facilities team and ensure the site is safe, secure, well-maintained, environmentally sustainable, and compliant.
This is a key new leadership role responsible for driving and maintaining the highest standards across the Gardens, working closely with internal and external partners.
The Gardens are in a period of change and are currently completing the Stage 2 NHLF grant application towards a £19m capital project.
Purpose of the Job
The Botanical Gardens operation continues to evolve and caters for a diverse population of visitors, staff, partners, and suppliers. It provides a wide range of services from heritage visitor attraction experience to teaching and research, through to revenue-generating corporate event space, as well as fulfilling our responsibilities in relation to our accredited Living Collections (our plants).
This new role will lead the Facilities functions across the site to enhance the service and its future development. The role’s purpose is to provide a safe, secure, well-maintained, environmentally sustainable, and compliant site for visitors, staff, volunteers, and contractors. To deliver this, the role will also need to engage and be responsive to external stakeholders. The role is key to driving and maintaining the highest standards across the site, whilst efficiently using Gardens resources.
The postholder will lead the Maintenance and Duty Management departments and maintain excellent relationships to enhance the team’s service provision to all internal and external partners. The postholder will be responsible for the Garden’s Health and Safety and Security procedures which include risk assessing, standard operating procedures, and reporting.
The Head of Facilities will be expected to work flexibly and from the Gardens and/or remotely for 40 hours per week across weekdays and weekends. The post holder will be expected to be flexible to the reactive needs of The Gardens and expect their shift allocations to vary, especially in the instances of Duty Management weekend/evening work. Working hours and days will be agreed in advance with the line manager and are subject to change as required.
This position may require an enhanced DBS check which will reveal any unspent convictions. A criminal record may not necessarily be a bar to placement, as any decision will be treated on its merits and individual circumstances subject to the Garden’s overriding obligations to protect the children and vulnerable adults in its charge, members of the public, the safety of the Garden’s staff, and The Living Collection.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a 7-days a week operation and regularly holds events outside its core hours; flexibility to work across the site, weekends, during holiday periods and before/after public opening hours is therefore an essential requirement of this role.
