Job summary The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department treats both elective and emergency patients. There is a close relationship between the Department and the Accident and Emergency Department. There are two operating theatres which are reserved exclusively for orthopaedic cases and is equipped with lamina flow air supply for joint replacements. It is fully equipped with modern osteosynthesis equipment, a full range of modern instrumentation for orthopaedic surgery, and mobile X-ray image intensification. A further operating theatre is available for other cases and emergencies. There are weekday all day trauma lists and one list each day at the weekends. Thirty adult beds are provided on one ward (Ward 23) and children's beds are available as required on the Paediatric Ward. There is a dedicated day case ward, where seventeen beds are nominated for use by the Orthopaedic Department for each list, and connects to a recently opened dedicated day surgery theatre. Other beds are available on other surgical wards. Complex head injuries and other neurosurgical conditions are referred to the Royal Free Hospital, London NW3. Plastic surgical cases, including certain hand conditions, are referred to the visiting consultant at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge who has a weekly out-patient clinic at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Spinal injuries may be referred to the RNOH, or Addenbrookes or managed in-house. Main duties of the job This post will provide training and experience in a wide range of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in accordance with the curriculum published by the SAC. The duties of the post are the normal duties of those of a ST3 equivalent and above in Trauma and Orthopaedics' Surgery and will include attendance at ward rounds and theatre sessions as determined by their Consultant and assistance at Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinics. The successful candidate will communicate appropriately with the General Practitioners and maintain satisfactory communications with other medical staff, not only in their own but also in other specialties as necessary to benefit the patient in their care. Addition, as necessary they will communicate with other hospitals or agencies for similar reasons. An important aspect of the Senior Clinical Fellow's work be to supervise the collation of data.
