What you’ll be doing
Whilst studying, you’ll get to work within the geotechnical design team of Engineering Services Design Delivery (ESDD). This will give you the opportunity to apply your learning and widen your skillset in railway, and geotechnical design.
The team work across all Regions of Network Rail on projects from early-stage designs through to detailed design, site supervision & assurance of construction works. They provide support for emergency and reactive projects including landslides, rockfalls, flooding, mining and scour, and work on projects including earthworks (embankment & cuttings), rock slopes, ground investigations, foundation designs and assessment, rainfall catchment analysis & drainage design.
A typical week can be highly varied and involve office-based design activity from Desk Studies to detailed analysis using software, stakeholder engagement, liaising with suppliers, site-based activity including supervision of investigations, construction activities, assessment of existing earthworks and structures.
Throughout the course, you’ll spend at least 20% of your working hours at university. Along with this part time education and internal training throughout the scheme, you’ll upskill yourself in the relevant skills and competencies required for a career in Network Rail.
