We are looking to appoint a highly enthusiastic individual, educated to degree level or above in microbiology or a closely related subject. It is essential to have a broad knowledge of environmental microbiological techniques and specifically in relation to Pharmaceutical microbiology, along with experience of cleanroom monitoring. The successful candidate will have excellent problem-solving skills and will be able to show initiative.
Quality Control North West is part of Stockport Foundation Trust and is an NHS regional specialty department responsible for providing pharmaceutical quality control services to NHS and non-NHS clients. The laboratories at Stockport are well equipped and advanced in analytical instrumentation and are accredited to ISO 17025 by UKAS.
Main duties of the job
To practice as Microbiology Analyst in the interest of the departmental commitment to provide an efficient service.
To perform investigations in the Microbiology and Environmental Monitoring section of the Quality Control North West laboratory by conducting a range of appropriate scientific tests.
To supervise Microbiology Technical Officers and Laboratory Assistants in the performance of tests according to established protocols.
To approve and communicate results from Microbiology and Environmental Monitoring to users of the QCNW service.
To ensure the work of the Microbiology section embraces Good Laboratory Practice and adequate Health and Safety Standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
To be responsible for one’s own work within the section.
To maintain a high quality of work within the Department and perform quality control procedures.
To help maintain the quality system of the section.
To check the validity and quality of results and processes in the area of responsibility.
To submit test results as required for the purpose of internal and national Quality Control Schemes.
To participate in the routine and specialist work of the Microbiology section.
Ensuring with colleagues the safe disposal of laboratory waste in accordance with defined protocols.
To communicate with QCNW staff, staff from within the Trust and other users of the QCNW service.
To communicate results to users of the QCNW service.
Responsibility for Patient Care
To help ensure safety and efficacy in pharmaceutical products prepared in hospitals throughout the North West of England.
To assist in planning of one’s own day-to-day work in the department.
To supervise microbiology technical officers and laboratory assistants to ensure that established laboratory protocols are followed.
To operate, set up and check specialised laboratory equipment for correct performance.
To maintain stocks of reagents and consumables required for analytical work.
To work as economically as is practicable at all times.
To contribute to improvements in LEAN work practices.
To contribute to Health and Safety improvements within the laboratories.
To assist in the training and development of microbiology technical officers and laboratory assistants within the QCNW laboratory.
To assist in processing of statistics and data entry as required.
To carry out research and development as delegated.
To assist in internal audit as required.
To undertake CPD, maintain knowledge and keep up to date with developments in the discipline.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Scientific Degree incorporating biological sciences.
* Analytical specialisation.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of pharmaceutical analysis and pharmaceutical microbiology.
* Knowledge of broad range of analytical, environmental and microbiological techniques.
* Knowledge of principles of GLP, laboratory H&S and COSHH.
Experience
* Relevant analytical and microbiological experience e.g. during undergraduate training.
* Experience of clean room monitoring.
* Work in a laboratory operating to similar standards of GLP/UKAS.
* Familiarity with pharmacopoeias.
Skills and Abilities
* Excellent analytical and microbiological skills.
* Able to use environmental monitoring equipment.
* Good team worker.
