Morson are currently looking to recruit an experienced Material test & verification controller for our defence client based in Huddersfield. The Quality and Metallurgy team are a multi-discipline team providing continual quality control support through product and process verification, development of processes, procedures and implementation of systems that ensure the products and processes fulfil quality standards, meet safety regulations, and satisfy customer and contractual requirements. Working as a direct report to the Lead Metallurgist alongside the metallurgy team, the Material Verification & Document Controller will support with verification and inspection of incoming materials and in-process material certification through manufacturing, heat treatment, and welding within the metallurgy laboratory. The role will require maintaining a consistent standard of laboratory practices and material acceptance processes, in accordance with recognised national and internal standards. The role will also support the Lead metallurgist with technical assistance to both the supply chain, procurement, engineering, and heat treatment teams to ensure independent technical advice and verification of materials and or certification, whilst also liaising with 3rd party material laboratories. The role will support a proactive and collaborative project working environment, providing governance in relation to Quality Management whilst supporting project deliveries. Daily activities will be conducting in accordance with our internal quality management system procedures and processes in line with ISO 9001:2015. Core Duties: • Support maintenance and governance of the ISO 9001:2015 Management systems alongside customer and legislative requirements, ensuring its continuing effectiveness by formal systematic auditing in the relevant value stream. • Support the monitoring of the organisations Quality, policies and practices being implemented consistently across the relevant value stream and verifying compliance to applicable legislation, regulations, standards, and customer requirements is maintained, including providing a service to the relevant value stream in relation to metallurgy aspects of order enquiries and contracts. • Working in a multi-functional metallurgy team alongside the quality function supporting a proactive and collaborative project working environment, providing governance in relation to Quality Management whilst supporting project deliveries. • Work within and strive to continually improve the Metallurgy processes, systems, equipment, and facilities, including the maintenance of standards, procedures, processes, and SOPs in accordance with national standards, international standards, and customer requirements. • Verification of raw material & bought out complete component certification, including interpretation of material certification (Supplied condition, surface preparation, Product & Ingot Chemical analysis, mechanical tests, heat treatment, Non-destructive testing, surface coating) in accordance with national standards, international standards, and customer requirements. • Performing duties, reviewing documentation, and checking compliance with recognised national and international standards (David Brown Specifications, BSI, EN, ISO, DIN, DEFSTAN, LR Rules for Naval Ships, or other). • Support procurement with the contract, verification and delivery of external heat treatment, material testing or material verification. Support the engineering function with the selection of materials, inspection and testing processes, and the suitability of material conditions. Support the production engineering function with the planning of heat treatment and metallurgical processes. ISO 9001:2015 Business system, process and product auditing including suppliers. • Manage and Identify discrepancies (NCR's) and manage these through the Non-conformance system in a timely manner. • Raise and maintain relevant non-conformance reports via SAP ensuring traceability and the correct characterisation of discrepancies relating to physical components or documentation. • Control defective items via segregation from conformant products and raise Supplier Defect Reports (SDR's) as appropriate. • To produce and maintain accurate inspection records. • Support creation of customer documentation packs and contractual documents. • Support project meetings, supplier meetings, and customer meetings providing updates and support on metallurgy function related issues as required. • Consult with Quality, Supply Chain, Production Engineering, Operations and Engineering daily regarding verification of products, conformance, and resolution of issues. • Preparing, reviewing, monitoring, reporting on frequent key performance indicators (K.P.I's) using industry standard tools and creating reports on aspects of Metallurgical performance, Management review elements, Cost of poor quality (COPQ), process governance, i.e., Histogram, Pareto, or other. Skills: • Minimum, experience in ISO9001:2015 or equivalent Management systems. • Industry Experience or recognised training programme in the some or all the following disciplines – Metallurgy, Heat treatment, Material testing. • Experience of working in an Engineering environment • Experience in Quality Control and Inspection of metallic materials or manufactured products in an engineering environment. • Interpretation of material certification in line with national and international standards. (BSI, EN, ISO, DIN, ASTM, DEF STAN or similar). • Ability to read and understand various engineering instructions, control plans, drawings, specifications, and procedures. • Computer literate with use of Microsoft Office. • Good written and verbal communication skills. • Understanding of ISO 9001 Quality management systems and experience or knowledge of other types of national and internal standards i.e., ISO, AQAP, Lloyds Rules, Defence Standards, and others. • Familiarity of manufactured components i.e., gears, shafts, bearings, gearboxes, and inter- related systems, including the manufacturing and assembly processes i.e., Machining, heat treatment, Non-destructive examination, Heat treatment, Metallurgy, Welding, Assembly, Testing and other related processes. • Familiarity of interpretation of engineering standards, specifications and technical requirements in mechanical engineering and defence related industries. This is an initial 6-12 month contract. The role is subject to full Security Clearance (SC) with no caveats.
