Position Summary:
The Planning Division Summer Student with the County of Perth Planning Division will be a part of a collaborative team focused on providing planning expertise to the County and its four member municipalities. The Planning Division is responsible for processing development applications and implementing planning policies.
This is an excellent opportunity for a post-secondary student enrolled in an Urban, Rural or Environmental Planning related field of study to gain practical experience in municipal land use planning. The position will offer the student policy experience and exposure to development planning experience. There will be an opportunity to work closely with Development Planners, the Senior Policy Planner and the GIS department on actual applications and policy development.
Qualifications:
* Enrolled in post-secondary education in a Planning program (Urban, Regional, Environmental or Rural focus) or related discipline (ex. geography, environmental studies, political science)
* Knowledge of the development application processes and planning policy, including a basic understanding of the Planning Act and the Provincial Policy Statement and applicable municipal planning tools (ex. Official plans, zoning by-laws)
* Understanding of municipal government operations
* Effective oral and written communication skills, with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively
* Strong organizational skills and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks or projects
* Experience with stakeholder consultation and community engagement or development public educational materials is considered an asset
* Knowledge of rural land use issues and planning is considered an asset
* Student membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners or the Ontario Professional Planners Institute is considered an asset
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.)
Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours per week)
Hourly Rate: $18.73
This is primarily an office position however some work in the field will be required (e.g. land use survey work, attending meetings).

Eligibility for Summer Student Employment:
To be eligible for summer student employment, applicants must meet one of the following:
* Be a full-time secondary or post-secondary student at an accredited institution.
* Be recognized as having a full-time status by their academic institution while applying for school vacation, practicum or work term, or planning to return to full-time studies in the next academic term.
* Be in their final year of study and not planning to return to full-time studies, but still eligible for summer student employment until they graduate.
Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post-secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related summer student employment opportunities, where appropriate.
