About the role Role type: Fixed term, Residential Dates: For course dates between end of June and end of August 2025 Working pattern: Saturday to Saturday, up to 50 hours per week on a shift pattern with overnight duties. 1 day off per week. Reports to: Course Director As Welfare Officer you will oversee all safeguarding and disciplinary issues on your assigned site. You will be able to collaborate with a wider team of welfare officers across our locations, contributing to a positive and supportive work environment. Main duties Incident management: Responding effectively to all welfare and safeguarding situations on site, ensuring high standards of care and professionalism are maintained. Safeguarding: Acting as the primary point of contact for any safeguarding concerns or incidents, ensuring compliance with safeguarding regulations and internal policies. Record keeping: Keeping appropriate and accurate records of all safeguarding, welfare and disciplinary issues. Atmosphere - Fostering a supportive environment on site for students, providing reassurance and guidance when required. Communication - Liaising with the senior management team to ensure all safeguarding policies are being adhered to, and be the primary contact for student welfare concerns. Staff wellbeing : Contributing to a positive work environment on site, and providing guidance and support to staff on managing difficult situations. Discipline - Liaising with the senior management team on site to ensure behaviour is appropriately managed. Residential duties - Up to 10 hrs per week, as part of the residential team including morning registrations, meal time supervision, curfew checks and overnight phone duty. About you You’re an empathetic and approachable person with a strong commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people. You’re able to foster a supportive environment for our students and collaborate well within a team. You can respond quickly to welfare concerns, demonstrating sound judgement and sensitivity in difficult situations, escalating or delegating as required. You’re comfortable advocating for the student, working in a fast-paced environment and responding quickly to sensitive situations. Essential Experience of working in a pastoral, welfare, or safeguarding role, preferably within an educational or residential summer school setting. Clear evidence of problem-solving with the ability to take initiative and make informed decisions in emergency situations. Proven ability to navigate challenging situations, involving student welfare and safeguarding, offering thoughtful solutions while maintaining high standards of pastoral care and professionalism. Excellent communication and organisation skills with the ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure. Right to work in the UK (we cannot sponsor work visas for this role) Desirable Knowledge of key safeguarding laws and practices and its application to a residential education setting, you may hold a Level 3 (DSL) Safeguarding certificate. Experience handling incidents, resolving conflicts, and providing support to individuals with SEN or mental health needs. Familiarity with the summer school environment and the diverse needs of children and young people.
