We are delighted to be able to advertise a full time permanent Band 8a Advanced Hand Therapy Practitioner post at Mid Yorkshire NHS Teaching Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for our service as we are expanding our team and a number of roles are being advertised. The Mid Yorkshire Specialist Hand Therapy Team with our expansion will consist of 24 Qualified Therapists, 5 Therapy Assistants and 5 Therapy Administrators, who are experienced, dynamic and passionate about providing a quality service for our patients. The team is supported by a dedicated team leader and service lead.
This role will join our existing Advanced Hand Therapy Practitioners having overall responsibility for the clinical delivery of Hand Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy in partnership with the therapy team and wider MDT within this specialist hand/plastics service.
The therapists work extremely closely with the hand and plastics Consultants and the rest of the multidisciplinary team ensuring patients receive the best care and high-quality service. We work generically and have dual competences in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy to provide you a seamless and effective service by only having to see one therapist where appropriate.
Main duties of the job
The role will involve taking on the lead for advanced pathway management and review within the hand therapy service, in order to optimise the operational efficiency and clinical outcomes. You will be expected to take on the lead responsibilities for managing Hand Therapy Trauma Clinics and Therapy led elective/outpatient clinics; working autonomously, assessing, diagnosing, planning and implementing pathways of care for this highly specialist caseload. You will have to work closely with the other advanced practitioners in hand therapy and be able to form great working relationships with consultants. You will deputise for the therapy service lead as required, delivering service improvements and providing expert clinical knowledge in relation to service development. You will lead appropriate education and training of therapy staff and other health care professionals including GPs, consultants and other AHPs. You will supervise other therapy practitioners working in plastics clinics including responsibility for the competency framework and supervision of therapy staff working in clinics.
Job responsibilities

* Accept sole clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
* Undertake the specialist and comprehensive assessment of patients referred from a variety of sources, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills.
* Formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, and utilising a wide range of advanced treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care in conjunction with the patient and carers.
* Provide diagnosis, develop and negotiate an agreed individual and holistic programme of treatment options, incorporating inter-disciplinary team working.
* Provide advanced clinical expertise to colleagues within the team and referrers to the service.
* Communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and ensure understanding of condition.
* Assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who may lack capacity to consent to treatment.
* Be the lead therapist at MDT meetings, case conferences and ensure therapeutic management of patients is integrated.
* Refer patients onwards to relevant healthcare professionals.
* Ensure robust clinical governance for service specialty, through supervision, audit and best practice through pathway development and evidence base.
* Work extended hours and weekends as service requires within own specialty, including emergency work as per service business continuity plan.
Person Specification
Experience
* Evidence of extensive clinical experience of relevant area at a senior level.
* Evidence of splinting and wound care.
* Participation in research, audit and service development.
* Supervision of more junior and support staff and students.
* Wide range of experience of management of MSK hand conditions with an emphasis on a particular speciality.
* Detailed knowledge of MSK hand pathologies within a defined speciality including indications for surgery.
* Current knowledge of evidence base relevant to area.
* Knowledge of bio-psychosocial approach.
* Information management and technology skills.
* Use and interpretation of data.
* Broad general experience of physiotherapy.
* Experience of working in clinics alongside consultants.
* Evidence of published papers.
* An active participant in regional/national groups.
* Understanding of business planning process.
* Understanding of skill mix and staffing requirements.
* Experience of working in partnership with stakeholders.
* Evidence of training at multi-disciplinary level.
Qualifications
* Degree in relevant therapy profession or equivalent.
* Registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Educated to Masters degree level in advanced clinical practice or equivalent level of experience in a specialist area including having relevant Masters modules.
* Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at recent and relevant postgraduate courses.
* Clinical Educators Course.
* Extensive evidence of training at a specialist level relevant to hand therapy.
* Injection therapy qualification or willingness to complete.
* Independent prescriber (if applicable to profession).
* Management/leadership course.
* Research qualification.
