Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Biochemistry team at Barnet Hospital as a Senior Biomedical Scientist. We are looking for a candidate with a passion for training and preferably, but not essentially, experience in maintaining staff competencies, ensuring mandatory and statutory training requirements are met, experience in quality management, interpretation of external report and providing support and guidance to staff undertaking the registration and specialist portfolios. You must be a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Biomedical Scientist and hold a postgraduate qualification in Blood Science.
Main Duties of the Job
The Clinical Biochemistry Service at Barnet Hospital NHS Trust is provided by Health Services Laboratories (HSL). The role will involve working alongside other members of the laboratory team and management, undertaking Biochemistry investigations, providing a 24/7 service. However, as a Senior Biomedical Scientist, you would typically work 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM weekdays and, in the event of sickness/emergencies, you would be expected to cover late shifts (12:00 PM - 8:30 PM) or night shifts (8:00 PM - 8:00 AM).
An experienced Biomedical Scientist is needed to lead a team of staff in a section of the department with responsibility for providing a comprehensive, high-quality laboratory medicine service to all HSL clients. The Senior Biomedical Scientist must use a combination of knowledge, decision-making, organizational, and supervisory skills to ensure that the appropriate testing is performed safely, accurately, and in a timely manner, on each sample received.
Job Responsibilities
Overall Job Purpose: To lead a team of staff in a section of the department with responsibility for providing a comprehensive, high-quality laboratory medicine service to all HSL clients. The Senior Biomedical Scientist must ensure that appropriate testing is performed safely, accurately, and in a timely manner on each sample received.
1. To coordinate and participate in the routine processing of specimens; allocate work to the other BMS and MLA staff to ensure a smooth workflow.
2. To ensure that for each sample the appropriate requested investigations are performed in a timely manner.
3. To ensure that specialized and urgent specimens are appropriately dealt with.
4. To participate in the technical work as required.
5. To ensure appropriate maintenance and safe use of equipment.
6. To assist in the development of rotas in conjunction with the other senior biomedical staff and ensure that they are operated correctly.
7. To coordinate adequate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents and manage their stock control.
8. To contribute to audit activities.
9. To contribute to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
10. To be involved in staff recruitment for Medical Laboratory Assistant and Biomedical Scientist grades, and conduct appraisals as required.
11. To undertake method development and evaluation as directed by the departmental manager.
12. To deputize for the departmental manager as required.

Qualifications
Essential
* Qualification in pathology disciplines consistent with State Registration requirements.
* MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant subject.
* Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline.
