Band 6 - Moving and Handling Advisor, Occupational Health

An exciting 10 months fixed term opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Moving & Handling Advisor to join the Trust's moving & handling team.
The post is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, predominately based at our Watford Hospital, with some travel required to our Hemel Hempstead and St Albans sites.
You will be responsible for undertaking staff DSE and ergonomic risk assessments, equipment management and advice, complex patient assessments and risk management related to M&H.
You will contribute to the protection of staff musculoskeletal health, through undertaking ergonomic moving & handling and DSE risk assessments and the provision of advice using the most recent legislation and guidelines.
Main duties of the job
* Undertake staff DSE and Ergonomic risk assessments.
* Advise on M&H equipment management and use.
* Assess patients with complex M&H needs and provide advice on specific equipment and handling.
* Educate and inform staff in safe M&H techniques using risk assessments and standardised practice.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven skills in the management of musculoskeletal disorders in relation to manual handling, working in line with basic principles, ergonomics, biomechanics and risk assessments underpinned by MHOR Legislation and NBE standards.
Job responsibilities
Provide advice relating to patients and service users who may have straightforward or complex moving and handling needs.
Ability to work alongside all staff in clinical and non-clinical settings advising on best practice in patient and inanimate load handling.
Undertake DSE workstation assessments and ergonomic workplace moving & handling risk assessments on staff with musculoskeletal disorders and advise managers and staff on the management of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace including Work Related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULDs).
Support the team to deliver training as per Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) and National Back Exchange (NBE) guidelines.
To assist in the management of M&H equipment to ensure statutory compliance with the LOLER and PUWER under H&S legislation, and FSN, MHRA and NPSA.
Partake in trials and audits of equipment and processes and advise on purchasing and safe management and use of M&H equipment in conjunction with the M&H Manager.
Assist the team in investigating incidents in relation to manual handling.
Support all departments by acting as a resource and providing expert advice in all things related to M&H.
Person Specification
Education and qualifications:
* A recognised diploma in Back Care Management/Ergonomics or working towards it or A recognised healthcare qualification (e.g. occupational therapist, physiotherapist, ergonomist, nurse, etc).
* A recognised moving and handling trainer's certificate based upon NBE inter professional curriculum.
* Teaching qualification e.g. PTTLS, C&G or similar.
Knowledge:
* Current and thorough knowledge of manual handling practices including ergonomic risk assessments and management of its application and practice in healthcare settings.
* Good knowledge of safer patient handling techniques and familiarity with current equipment options.
* Understand how NHSLA, CQC and core skills training framework applies to manual handling.
* Keyboard skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
* Undertaking audits, gathering data and report writing.
* Varied knowledge of current equipment options.
Experience:
* Experience in a healthcare setting/ post registration experience in healthcare experience in delivering moving and handling training and service.
* Experience of teaching large and small groups with a variety of disciplines.
* Experience of undertaking moving and handling assessments including patients, MSD and DSE.
* Experience of handling and assessing different patient groups.
