Purpose Data Modeller collaborate with key business stakeholders and analysts to define central and business data models that empower data engineers, analysts, and dashboard/report creators to make data-driven decisions with confidence. The role will also work close work alongside Data Analysts and Data Architects to define data sources and warehouse models, ensuring seamless integration and optimal data utilization. Job Role Accountabilities Requirements Gathering: Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather and understand requirements for data modelling, data product design, and development, ensuring alignment with business goals and objectives. Data Modelling: Partner with business stakeholders and analysts to design and develop both logical and physical data models, illustrating relationships and business logic to transform and structure data effectively. Metadata Management: Collect and manage metadata, ensuring it is integrated into relevant systems and solutions to enhance usability and data accessibility. Engineering Support: Work closely with the engineering team to ensure developed data models are deployment-ready, and provide support for troubleshooting and resolving any issues during deployment and testing phases. Technical Documentation: Develop, maintain, and regularly review high-quality technical documentation for all data models, ensuring it is consistently stored and accessible for future reference. Continuous Improvement: Drive innovation by continually improving modelling methods and recommending process enhancements that help the team meet and exceed expectations. Quality Assurance: Conduct peer reviews of models and documentation to ensure adherence to established procedures and standards, aiming to build quality into models and providing thoroughly tested solutions. Stakeholder Engagement and Support: Engage with stakeholders through various channels (e.g., communities of practice) to promote data platform adoption and enhance the overall data maturity within the organization. Examples of Key Activities: Liaise with business, change, and data stakeholders to ensure alignment with project scope and timelines. Collaborate with business stakeholders, data analysts, and engineers to clarify and refine business requirements. Assist in documenting frameworks, standards, and models to maintain consistency across processes. Ensure adherence to defined standards, processes, and best practices. Perform data profiling and explore source data to assess quality and suitability. Contribute to the development and review of models within the silver layer of the enterprise data model (e.g., Data Vault). Define semantic models that facilitate report development and enable self-service reporting. Design and document logical and physical data models for the gold presentation layer (e.g., star/snowflake schema). Optimize physical data models in collaboration with engineering and data analysis teams for improved performance. Troubleshoot source-to-target data mappings and logical transformations at each data stage. Collaborate with the data governance team to review and document data quality issues. Establish and implement reconciliation techniques alongside the data governance team. Gather metadata from the business to integrate into tools such as Purview and Power BI. Participate in the design of data warehouses/data marts, working closely with cross-functional team members. Provide ongoing support to business users through the Analytics Community or Practice framework, including regular “surgeries” or consultations. Conduct ad hoc SQL queries for analysis and investigation. Attend and contribute to SCRUM ceremonies (stand-ups, retrospectives, refinements, PIP planning, etc.). Present to stakeholders as required, providing clear insights and updates. Experience Proven experience in developing data models within the financial or insurance sectors. Expertise in designing and optimizing models for seamless consumption in Microsoft Power BI. Hands-on experience with Azure-based analytics products, including Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and Azure SQL Server. Strong background in IT development processes and delivery lifecycles, including development methodologies, release strategies, configuration management, and tools across the entire project lifecycle. Experience working within an Agile environment, delivering outcomes within defined Sprints, and familiarity with Agile principles and ceremonies. Skills and Knowledge: Expertise in dimensional modelling (Kimball) and familiarity with Data Vault 2.0. Strong SQL skills and aptitude for data development. Knowledge of Agile methodologies (SCRUM, Kanban, SAFe, etc.). Ability to quickly understand business problems and translate them into actionable solutions. Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities. Capable of constructively challenging requirements to add value to the organization. Adaptable to shifting priorities, ambiguity, and rapid change. Proficient in data visualization and presentation using commercial and open-source tools. Familiar with metadata management, data quality, and stewardship platforms.
