An exciting opportunity has arisen in Cellular Pathology for an enthusiastic, forward thinking senior manager to lead the North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS) Cellular Pathology Service. Based at the Royal Stoke site you will be supported by the Consultant Head of Department, 8a laboratory lead and 8a Mortuary lead.
The successful applicant will need to take full responsibility for the end-to-end process in Histology including the administrative function along with oversight of the four hospital mortuaries (two of which are body stores) across the network.
We are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a master's degree (or equivalent) and proven technical experience as well as a management and leadership qualification to continue to develop and lead our Cellular Pathology service.
NMCPS Cellular Pathology processes more than 80,000 surgical cases, 7,000 non-gynaecological cytology cases and 800 postmortems (the majority for H M Coroner) per annum. The laboratory is modern, well equipped and has excellent facilities including those for immunohistochemistry and rapid processing as well as FISH and Molecular services.

Main duties of the job
You will be supported by a strong and experienced pathology management team to continue developing the laboratory service and expanding the biomedical scientist dissection and advanced practice reporting strategy.
As part of the network business case a significant investment in Sakura SMART automation has been agreed as well as a joint Laboratory information system (LIMS) across the network. The LIMS project is now complete and Digital Pathology is currently being rolled out.
We advocate "lean principles" and have introduced 7 day working in the laboratory. Our plans to expand digital pathology will further underpin successful and efficient flexible working, teaching and research.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent
* MSc or equivalent qualification to FIBMS Standard
* State Registration with HPC
* Recognised Management Qualification / Training or extensive management experience
* Proof of on-going CPD
* Teaching qualification
Experience
* Proven management experience in Pathology at 8a level or above
* A minimum of 5 years post registration experience in a senior Biomedical Scientist position
* A minimum of 5 years' experience of operational management
* Experience in service development and business planning
* Evidence of change management
* Evidence of experience regarding the negotiation of complex high value external contracts
* Ability to operationalise strategic plans to create effective working models, policies and procedures
* Experience in a professional role such as UKAS Assessor, IBMS Examiner, participation in development of EQA schemes, teaching Biomedical Science
Skills
* Managerially competent in a range of operational areas including Technical, Quality, Health and Safety, Human Resources and Finance
* Experience of active participation in UKAS quality assessments & accreditation visits
* Proven ability to work as part of a cross disciplinary team
* Experience of using a range of IT applications, including Microsoft Office and Pathology computer systems.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to balance multiple priorities across a range of pathology specialties and service areas, managing a highly complex workload under pressure
* Ability to lead and motivate a team
Knowledge
* Comprehensive understanding of the professional training/education agenda
* Strategic awareness of current issues within Pathology
* Up-to-date knowledge of UKAS Standards and their application within the area of expertise
