Reporting to the Finance Director, this role is a key leadership role and requires a self-motivated, impactful, qualified accountant, with strong experience in financial reporting, financial processes and controls, and change management. Charity sector reporting knowledge and experience is an advantage but not essential. This role will require a strong and effective communicator with the ability to build relationships with, and influence, a variety of key senior stakeholders, internal and external.
St John Ambulance are looking for a dynamic and experienced Financial Controller to be part of our Finance team.
The role will be based at our Shared Services Centre in Sheffield where you will have on-site parking, but we encourage a hybrid working model.
The incumbent will ensure the production of timely, accurate management accounts as well as the provision of financial information to trustees and the Finance Committee. The role is also responsible for the charity’s statutory audited accounts and is a key contact point for the external audit. Other areas of responsibility include cashflow forecasts, ensuring legal compliance with tax, VAT, gift aid, treasury management and providing technical accounting advice to St John to ensure it has appropriate and robust financial governance.

About You
To be successful in this role, education to a degree level is desirable and a Professional Accounting Qualification (fully qualified ACA, ACCA or CIMA) is essential along with significant experience regarding the production of annual statutory accounts and management of the external audit process and experience in dealing with stakeholders at all levels, including Board level.
About the Role
* Be accountable for the production of the audited statutory financial statements and the completion of the external audit, to the specified timetable. Provide advice on best practice in external financial reporting.
* Lead the monthly reporting cycle. Key responsibilities include the monthly reconciliation, control and reporting of financial information including management accounts, preparation of accruals and prepayments, submission of gift aid and the preparation of VAT returns.
* Responsibility for the monthly rolling balance sheet and cash flow forecast at a charity level and ensuring the treasury function maximises the return to St John on working capital and investments.
* Act as the financial lead on the financial control environment. Drive improvements in counter fraud awareness and culture.
