Chair of Management Committee Horizon School
We are currently seeking a new Chair for our Management Committee at Horizon School, a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) committed to providing every child with the opportunity to reach their full potential. Join us in shaping the future of education for children who need additional support in North Suffolk.
* Location: Lowestoft
An opportunity to make a difference in children’s lives
At Horizon School, we deliver short-term educational placements for students experiencing difficulties at their mainstream schools, often facing exclusion or requiring additional intervention. Our pupils, many of whom have social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, deserve the best possible education to reintegrate into mainstream schooling or move on to specialist provisions.
Our management committee has been the backbone of this initiative, offering strategic guidance and governance to ensure that our school remains effective in delivering quality education. The committee is essential in driving forward our school’s vision, but we are currently seeking a new Chairperson to lead this crucial effort.
As the Chair of the Horizon School Management Committee, you will have the opportunity to guide our leadership team and influence the future of the children under our care.
Your role will be pivotal in ensuring that our school continues to meet the needs of our students and operates at the highest standards of governance and educational performance.
About the role
Chairperson of the Management Committee
As the Chair of Horizon School’s Management Committee, you will provide strategic leadership and governance to ensure that our school continues to deliver high-quality education to students with SEMH needs. The role of the Chair is critical in setting the tone for effective governance, offering support and challenge to the school’s senior leadership team, and ensuring that the committee fulfills its statutory responsibilities.
The Chairperson’s role involves several key duties:
* Governance leadership: Lead the committee in fulfilling its duties outlined in the Governance Handbook, including overseeing educational performance, financial management, and the school’s overall strategic direction.
* Monitoring and evaluation: Conduct regular monitoring visits and work closely with the senior leadership team to ensure that the school’s curriculum and interventions are meeting the needs of all pupils. The Chair is also responsible for overseeing the internal skills audit of the management committee to ensure its effectiveness.
* Liaison and representation: Act as the primary point of contact for external stakeholders, including the local authority, and represent the school at various functions. The Chair is often called upon to make decisions on behalf of the management committee in urgent situations, ensuring the school remains compliant with policies and regulations.
* Support and accountability: Provide support and guidance to the Headteacher and the senior leadership team while holding them accountable for the school’s performance. The Chairperson must be prepared to offer constructive criticism and work collaboratively with the leadership team to improve the quality of education and management at Horizon.
The commitment required is approximately 2 – 3 days per month, with regular meetings, monitoring visits, and liaising with the school’s leadership.
As the Chair, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that Horizon School remains financially secure, academically successful, and a supportive environment for both staff and students.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a committed, dynamic, and experienced individual who understands the challenges faced by children with SEMH needs and the importance of governance in education. The ideal candidate will be someone who has:
* Strong understanding of governance: You should be familiar with the governance frameworks and have experience in ensuring that leadership teams are held accountable for their performance.
* Exceptional leadership and communication skills: As Chair, you must lead the committee with authority while fostering a collaborative and inclusive approach. You will also be the key liaison with external stakeholders, so excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
* Organisational and analytical skills: The role requires someone who is well-organised, able to manage complex issues, and adept at scrutinising school policies, budgets, and performance data.
* Knowledge/understanding of SEND or a willingness to learn fast is desirable. As our Chair, you will need to ensure that we are aligned with the legal frameworks, best practices, and effective interventions that can enhance the learning experiences of our learners.
* A passion for education and social impact: You should have a genuine passion for improving the lives of young people, particularly those who face significant challenges in their educational journeys. Your role as Chair will enable you to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable students in North Suffolk.
This role is ideal for someone looking to make a lasting impact in the education sector. If you have the necessary skills, experience, and passion for this role, we would love to hear from you.
Peridot Partners and Horizon School are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.
