Job Description
Purpose of the role:
Moore Kingston Smith has identified a need to ring-fence the VAT compliance function as a key service offering in the Outsourcing Team. The successful person would be responsible for operating and developing a full range of compliance service offerings, particularly with regards to offering clients support with "Making Tax Digital" and the evolving automation of tax functions.
The person would need to be experienced in working with VAT accounting systems and extrapolating data for the preparation of VAT returns. The person should also have good interpersonal skills in order to be able to communicate effectively with all the various clients, colleagues, and HMRC staff as necessary.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Manages a portfolio of clients ensuring that for each client all deadlines are met, the work is carried out within budget and the job is finalised to minimise manager/director review time.
2. Supports the Outsourcing Team with any technical VAT queries.
3. Actively participates in meetings, workshops, and training.
4. Attends training and is committed to CPD, continually developing and increasing knowledge and skills to give the best possible service and advice to clients and MKS staff.
5. Assists with billing procedures and debt collection where appropriate and in liaison with client partner.
6. Provides ideas and input to new innovations and improvements to help improve efficiency and productivity and better improve the quality of services we offer.
7. Involvement in our key sectors such as Media and Marketing Services, Property and Professional Firms, Financial Services and Tech as well as NFP, hospitality, healthcare, education, retail, and international consultancy and outsourcing.
VAT Compliance:
1. Preparation, at different levels and complexity of VAT returns and reviewing and submissions of VAT returns, Intrastat returns and MOSS returns;
2. Assisting clients with VAT EU refund reclaim;
3. Identifying, preparing and reviewing of voluntary disclosures;
4. VAT registrations;
5. VAT deregistration;
6. Option to Tax;
7. Partial exemption calculations and implementation of the methods to ensure compliance;
8. Acting as the key point of liaison between the client and HMRC.
Additional Duties:
1. Raising awareness and support on Making Tax Digital, HMRC's compliance requirements, and providing internal support for VAT queries from staff;
2. Becoming the day-to-day contact for allocated clients;
3. Maintaining a strong working knowledge in respect of all areas of VAT, including keeping up to date with the appropriate legislation and developments in VAT law.
4. Fostering good internal relations across services lines in Tax and legal Consultancy and Corporate Finance resulting in direct work referrals.
5. Preparing and delivering presentations and VAT training to clients, non-tax, and non-VAT specialists.
Skills and experience:
- Experience in a similar role, managing a complex portfolio.
- Ideally a Tax Qualification such as ATT or CTA.
- Commitment to client care and service beyond expectation.
- High level of technical competence.
- Commitment to CPD and ensuring technical competence is continually improved.
- Commercially aware and able to apply and communicate technical knowledge in a clear and commercial way.
- Good communicator.
- Ability to give feedback (good or bad) in a constructive manner.
