Support Worker for Autism in Classroom Settings

Responsibilities:
1. Tailored Student Support:
Provide one-on-one and group support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in a classroom setting, under the direction of experienced teachers and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO). Offer emotional and behavioural support to help students manage sensory and social challenges in the school environment.
2. Assist with Individualized Plans (IEPs):
Help implement individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies designed to meet the unique needs of each student. Monitor and record student progress, providing valuable feedback to the SENCO and teachers.
3. Facilitate Access to Learning:
Support students in understanding and engaging with learning materials by adapting resources, using visual aids, and providing clear, step-by-step guidance. Encourage the use of alternative communication methods, where necessary, to promote independence and participation.
4. Build Positive Relationships:
Develop trusting and supportive relationships with students, helping to foster their confidence and encouraging them to engage in classroom activities. Provide a calming and reassuring presence for students who may display challenging behaviours or need additional emotional support.
5. Collaborate with Multidisciplinary Teams:
Work alongside teachers, therapists, and other specialists, contributing observations that help inform the student's development and progress. Attend meetings and contribute to discussions about best practices for supporting students with autism.
6. Maintain a Safe and Inclusive Environment:
Help create a classroom environment that is safe, inclusive, and adapted to meet the sensory and learning needs of students with autism. Ensure that safeguarding procedures are always followed to protect the wellbeing of all students.
Minimum Requirements:
* Experience or Interest in Autism Support:
A genuine interest in supporting children and young people with Autism and other special educational needs is essential.
* Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
The ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families, adapting your approach to meet individual needs.
* Patience, Empathy, and Resilience:
A calm, empathetic, and resilient attitude, especially when managing challenging behaviours or emotional situations.
* Willingness to Learn:
A proactive approach to learning and professional development, with a strong desire to enhance your skills in autism support.
* Team Player:
The ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, sharing insights and working together to support each student's progress.
* Safeguarding Checks:
Willingness to undergo safeguarding checks, including an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance.
