Job summary
The Care of the Elderly department at BarnsleyHospital NHS FT provides outstanding geriatric services to 4 medical wardsincluding our Acute Stroke Unit and Acute Frailty areas.
We have a very innovative and proactive frailtyteam who have developed an Electronic Geriatric Assessment tool, as well as aFrailty SDEC area and front door frailty service in the Emergency departmentand CDU.
The department has an outpatient area(Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit) with a long tradition of providingmultidisciplinary care for patients with falls, incontinence and Parkinsonsdisease. Besides Parkinsons and Fallsclinics. We also run tilt table,syncope, continence, general internal medicine and geriatric medicine clinics.
We have a specialist continence team, fallsprevention team, dementia nurse specialist, dementia and delirium lead, andthere will be a scope for cooperation with the successful candidate to improvethose services.
The department also has a vibrant anddeveloping Integrated Care Service which provides a Virtual Frailty Wardservice (step up from community and step down from hospital) in conjunctionwith community nursing colleagues, as well as thirty intermediate care andrehabilitation beds in the Acorn Unit.
Main duties of the job
Strengthening the delivery of a high-qualityacute stroke medicine service across Barnsley.
Maintaining high quality stroke services with acommitment to the ICS.
Providing leadership and expertise in themanagement of acute stroke in the emergency pathway.
Developing new, high quality, patient centredstroke services.
Liaising and developing working policies withrelevant hospital departments, local General Practitioners, nurses andparamedical staff.
Developing innovative practices in clinicalpatient management, focusing on high quality care and emphasis on communitymanagement where appropriate.
Maintaining close links with colleagues on allsites.
Providing a 7-day service with colleagues
Teaching and training undergraduates as well aspostgraduate doctors
Quality assurance of the service and individualpractice
Developing with colleagues, an integrated strokeservice across the Barnsley health economy.

Qualifications
Essential
1. MRCP or equivalent.
2. You must be on the specialist register for stroke medicine as well as either general internal medicine or acute medicine or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee.

4. Relevant higher degree.
Teaching, Training, Audit and Research

5. Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
6. Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes.

7. Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications.
8. Training in clinical and educational supervision.
