Duties
This includes responsibility for project design management and client relationships.
Capable of leading projects and typically responsible for: defining design methods, specifications and performance requirements; carrying out/supervising site inspections; preparing design and economic feasibility studies, surveys and reports, engineering designs and layouts, specifications, cost estimates, technical content of enquiries and quotations, and technical literature; supervising technicians and/or supplying them with design information for the production of suitable documents.
Plans engineering projects in terms of methods, costs, time schedules and staff requirements.
Is sufficiently competent and confident to modify standard procedures, develop new approaches, apply existing criteria in new ways and draw conclusions from comparative situations.
Decisions and Recommendations
Decides: division of work; methods of design; specifications for new projects, optimum layout; site suitability; choice of materials, components or ancillary equipment; solution of design problems which arise; evaluation of designs, layouts, reports, proposals and supporting calculations and specifications; design changes necessitated by commissioning, site or construction difficulties.
Recommends on: project feasibilities; budgets and time schedules; choice of suppliers and contractors; allowable concessions or quality control limits during manufacture; suitability of design proposals for new projects.
Decisions and recommendations are usually accepted as technically accurate and feasible but may be reviewed to ensure adherence to policies and objectives.
Supervision Received
Design projects are assigned in terms of objectives or performance requirements which are subject to approval at outset.
Guidance on policy or complex design problems is available.
Main review is against production of designs, layouts, specifications, cost estimates, reports and proposals to agreed objectives or performance requirements in a timely manner and to client satisfaction.
Commercial and risk issues relating to fees, appointments and potential disputes.
Leadership, Authority and Supervision Exercised
Supervise a design team containing professional engineers and technicians. Displays the values and behaviours expected by QODA.
Assigns and outlines work, reviews design methods and checks plans, designs, layouts, specifications, reports and proposals for technical accuracy and adequacy. Gives technical guidance to own staff and may advise on construction methods.
Business Development
Consistently liaises with Clients and other industry professionals in a professional and appropriate manner to generate excellent working relationships and a high level of Client satisfaction, leading to repeat business.
Identify and pursue new business opportunities where appropriate with existing and new clients. Develop business relationships to secure additional work for the team.
