Salary: UH5 £28,081pa with potential to progress to £31,387 by annual increments
Annual Leave: 25 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year.
The School of Physics Engineering & Computer Science (SPECS) is seeking to appoint a Senior Technical Officer into an exciting technical role. SPECS is in a thrilling period of expansion and we have recently moved into our new £100M Building “SPECTRA” and are in receipt of a multimillion-pound research grant. We offer a wide range of degrees including Physics, Robotics & AI, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and in terms of size for those disciplines, we are the Number 1 HEI in the UK.
Whilst the role will primarily support activities in the manufacturing facilities, you will also have the opportunity to support other areas of the School. This dynamic position will cover the manufacturing area with the potential to utilise your talent to make it your own.
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. Support the operation and maintenance of advanced manufacturing machinery, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
2. Prepare materials and equipment for practical sessions.
3. Support both CNC and manual machining operations.
4. Implement and monitor rigorous safety measures.
5. Assist researchers and students in conducting their work effectively and safely.
6. Maintain a clean and organised workspace.
7. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or operational issues.
Skills and experience required:
1. Professional experience in operating and maintaining manufacturing facilities or workshops, including both CNC and manual machining operations.
2. Proficiency in programming mills and lathes, setting tools, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches.
3. Ability to perform calculations using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry, and prove part programs.
4. Proficiency in reading drawings and specifications with an understanding of geometric tolerances and dimensions.
5. Knowledge of manufacturing materials and their properties.
6. Experience using precision measuring instruments such as callipers, depth gauges, indicators, and CMM.
7. Demonstrate accuracy, neatness, and safe practice, including good time management.
8. Good communication and interpersonal skills, a client-oriented approach, and the ability to demonstrate and train others.
9. Attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, prioritise, organise workload, and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
Qualifications required:
1. Educated with a minimum of A-levels or equivalent, or have relevant proven experience.
2. A recognised qualification in an appropriate subject at degree or HNC/HND level or equivalent is desirable.
