Main duties of the job
This role includes Research and Innovation Lead for Surgery. The post-holder will support the Research & Innovation (R&I) Department in the expansion of the R&I portfolio, encouraging clinicians and other staff to participate in clinical R&I projects. As a member of the Research & Innovation Governance Group (RIGG), the post-holder will contribute to the development and realization of the Trust R&I strategy.
The key part of the role will be for the R&I Lead to continue expanding and strengthening existing links with academia, Clinical Research Network (CRN), NHS partners, commercial sector, and other collaborators to grow the R&I portfolio, with the ultimate goal of the Trust becoming a University Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A formal Job Plan will be agreed between the appointee and their lead Clinician within three months after the commencement date. The appointee is expected to contribute towards management of elective and emergency General Surgery conditions and will be on-call with 11 other members of the department on a 1:12 cycle.
The key areas for the postholder will include:
* Provision of clinical leadership in the delivery of a high-quality emergency surgical service.
* Providing teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
* Participating in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.
* Managing a wide range of acute and elective general surgical conditions with a special interest in benign Upper GI surgery.
* Participating in a formal development and mentorship programme for newly appointed consultants.
* Abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or The Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR).
* FRCS
Experience
* Clinical training and experience to CCT standards.
* Expertise in open and laparoscopic surgery.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
* Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.
* Applicant must be able to perform hiatus hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery.
