Species are at the heart of all of the RSPB’s work, and are the focus of some of our most complex and contentious policy work, from tackling the causes of persecution and the licensing of species control, to species recovery and reintroductions. And species are in trouble, as the State of Nature report makes clear.
We are offering a 5 month full-time (parental leave cover) role within the RSPB's UK Site Conservation and Species Policy Team. This role is also available as a job share or a secondment opportunity. We are looking for a passionate and motivated person/people to fill this role which provides an opportunity to develop policy and advocacy skills and expertise in this highly varied area of work.

What's the role about?
The post holder will play a key role in the development, coordination of and support for species policy work across the four countries of the UK, and work with the Heads of Species in each of the four countries in the delivery of species policy work.
Key activities will include:
* Making the case for the protection and recovery of species
* Supporting high level advocacy with the Westminster and devolved governments and their statutory agencies to influence the development of UK and four country approaches to species policy in response to emerging national, UK and global commitments to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity.
* Undertaking analysis of current practices and evidence of impacts, developing RSPB policy and advocating the need for change, working across the four different national legal, policy and political contexts in which the RSPB operates (i.e. in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).
* Supporting and coordinating work between the 4 country Heads of Species;
* Working with colleagues ‘on the ground’ to support the delivery of species recovery on the RSPB estate and within our Priority Landscapes, and with other policy specialists (including RSPB colleagues and those in partner organisations) to ensure integration of species policy within our wider work to tackle the nature and climate crises and to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity.
* Working with Wildlife Enquiries and Communications colleagues to address the many queries that arise across a very wide range of species policy issues.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
* Educated to degree level or equivalent, or experience relevant to the role.
* Able to analyse complex issues in a fast paced environment.
* Able to negotiate with and influence others e.g. professional, persuasive, engaging, confident.
* Good written and verbal communication skills, and competent use of Microsoft Office.
* Strong time management and organisational skills.
* Able to prioritise effectively.
* Able to manage projects effectively.
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:
* Practical experience of operating in a policy and/or advocacy role.
* An understanding of environment/biodiversity policy in general, and species policy in particular.
* Working understanding of the most important 4 country (i.e. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), UK, European and global institutions relevant to environment/biodiversity policy in general, and species policy in particular.
* An understanding of the role of public-facing communications/campaigns in supporting policy advocacy.

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
