Glebelands Organic Produce is a 2.7 acre organic market garden in Sale, Cheshire not far from Manchester city centre. We produce mostly salad crops which we sell to local shops, vegbox schemes and wholesalers in the local area. We are Soil Association registered.
We are a new business with one year of experience under our belts. We took over the site and business from Glebelands City Growers on 1st January of last year and proved we can provide the same standard of high quality veg as the previous owners. We plan to continue with that trend through 2022 and beyond.
We are looking for 1 or 2 able and willing bodies to come and work with us through the 2022 summer season. Experience is not necessary as full training will be given but a keen attitude, an ability to work hard in all weathers and an interest in being part of the fast growing sustainable food production movement is – emphasis on the hard work! This job is not for the faint hearted or anyone who sees every day as a Sunday afternoon on the allotment. If you have not farmed or worked a highly physical job before this job will introduce you to levels of tiredness you did not think were possible.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Employment will start 28th March 2022 and end on 28th October 2022.
Duties will include assisting with plant raising, planting, bed preparation, harvesting, prepping and packing, site maintenance and routine cleaning of facilities, tools and equipment and any other work that may be reasonably expected at a market garden. If you have a clean driving license and are confident driving a van, then you may be asked to help out with deliveries some weeks, but this will be kept within normal working hours where possible.
Market gardening is physically very demanding. In order for the business to be profitable all members of the team need to be up for working quickly and efficiently, be self-motivated, be able to work alone or as part of the team and in whatever weather gets thrown at us.
SALARY, WORKING HOURS AND BENEFITS
We will be paying £9.50/hour for 32 hours/week across 4 days. We work Monday to Friday 8am until 5pm although it is sometimes occasionally necessary to start an hour earlier or finish an hour later but this will be arranged in advance. Which 4 of these 5 days you work is negotiable but you will need to stick those 4 days for the duration of the contract (days can be swapped around if needed as long as it’s arranged in advance). Ideally, we will have everyone in on Mondays and Fridays as these are the busiest pick days – therefore one of your days off will be Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Of the 9 hours spent on site we have a 20min tea break and 40 mins for lunch which are unpaid.
We always work bank holidays and there is no extra pay for this. We don’t usually work weekends, but should we need to for any reason, and your services are required, then this will be arranged in advance, and you are not obliged to if you don’t want to for any reason.
HOLIDAYS
You will be entitled to 12 days of holiday throughout this period.
SICK PAY
We will pay 5 days of sick pay on full pay throughout this period. If you need more than this, then you can claim statutory sick pay at £96.35/week, but we will need a doctor’s note from you to support this claim.
PENSION
We enrol all our employees into a pension scheme (NEST) – we have to by law – but some people don’t consider this a worthwhile investment and you therefore have the option to opt out if you wish.
