Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
Essential Criteria
1. Minimum A level qualification or equivalent qualification or equivalent knowledge.
2. National Clinical Coding Qualification or equivalent experience (as per guidance from NHS Connecting for Health).
3. Undertaken the Clinical Coding Foundation Course.
4. Up to date with Clinical Coding Refresher Courses.
Desirable Criteria
1. Qualification or experience in science or healthcare environment.
2. European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).
Experience
Essential Criteria
1. The principles of Clinical Coding.
2. Knowledge of the importance of confidentiality, Data Protection Act and Caldicott Principles.
3. Significant knowledge of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology.
4. Significant knowledge of clinical coding requirements and standards.
Skills, Ability and Knowledge
Essential Criteria
1. Ability to motivate others within the coding team, on wards and other clinical staff to ensure coding standards are met.
2. Ability to recognise poor quality data and development of improvement actions.
3. Able to use Microsoft applications i.e. Word, Excel.
4. Ability to correctly code a number of clinical specialties and more complex specialties.
5. Ability to provide coding advice and support to less experienced coding officers.
6. Ability to work to a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
7. Ability to communicate with colleagues at different levels i.e. multi-disciplinary teams.
8. Ability to explain complex coding terminology to a variety of contacts and stakeholders in order that they clearly understand coding requirements.
9. Ability to overcome barriers to engagement of stakeholders by using persuasive communications.

1. Participation in Clinical Coding Audits.

* Please note that the salary advertised is for full-time hours. If this post is less than 37.5 hours per week, the salary will be pro-rata.

Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS)
If the role you are applying for is identified as either controlled or regulated activity as defined in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (2006), any offer of employment is provisional upon a satisfactory DBS check being obtained.
The healthcare sector is exempted from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
In line with other NHS organisations in the North West Region, the Trust is now passing the charge for undertaking a DBS check on to candidates in the event they are successfully appointed into the post for which they have applied. Candidates can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months as a deduction from the monthly salary. However, if you are applying for a post as a BANK worker, the payment must be made in full at the time of employment checks. By applying for this vacancy you are agreeing to this undertaking in the event you are successfully appointed.
The cost of an Enhanced Disclosure will be £55.38 and for a Standard Disclosure will be £27.38. This cost is not applicable for a Volunteer post.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
